The sight words and their practice lines

The word on its own 3

  • she 3 letters for 2 sounds. The s and the h make one quiet sound together, and the e says its own name. Only the h goes tall.
  • She she Capital S beside small s: one curve at two heights. She does the action in most sentences, so it often comes first and needs the capital.
  • she she she she Four to trace in one row. Ask for a whispered sh each time the pencil starts the word again.

Spot-the-word rows 4

  • he she her she the Circle she 2 times. He hides inside she, her adds an r to it, and the ends in the same two letters.
  • me she we she be Circle she 2 times. Me, we and be rhyme with she and end in the same e. Only she has three letters.
  • she see she sea she Circle she 3 times. See and sea begin with the same s and end in the same sound, but neither has an h.
  • shy she shoe she Circle she 2 times. Shy and shoe open with the same sh, so the child has to read to the end of each word.

Missing-letter rows 3

  • __e __op __ip The same pair is missing each time: she, shop, ship. Two letters to write, one sound to say.
  • sh_ s_e _he One letter is missing each time: e, then h, then s. The middle gap is the one that slips, because no separate h can be heard.
  • she sh_ s__ ___ The word fades from the right, one letter at a time. The last gap is all three letters from memory.

How this list was compiled: Every line was written for this site on 2026-09-18 and read aloud for sense, except She sells shells., which is cut down from a tongue twister first published in 1850 as a diction exercise (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tongue_twister, checked 2026-09-18). No line is taken from a published sight word list or workbook, and the page claims no list or grade level for the word. Spellings were checked against the macOS system word list on 2026-09-18; sells and shells are plain plurals that the list leaves out, and were checked one by one. The counts in the spot-the-word rows and the word counts of the sentences were worked out. That she is said as sh plus a long e, with no separate sound for the h: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/she (pronunciation, checked 2026-09-18). That the letters sh usually stand for one sound in English: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh_(digraph) (checked 2026-09-18). Sound notes describe general American pronunciation. Licence: own work

How it works

A child who taps she as s, h, e gets three sounds and no word. This sight word she worksheet has them trace it, circle it among see, he, the and her, and finish ___ can run fast.

Teach the sh before the word

The s and the h are a team with one sound, the one that goes with a finger on the lips. Leave out the h and what is left, se, reads back as see. On the board, write the row "__e __op __ip" from the full list near the bottom of this page. It asks for the team three times: she, shop, ship. Only sentences can go on the sheet.

He, her and the beside she

He sits inside she, and her points at the same person. The Oxford English Corpus ranking on Wikipedia places she 30th among all English words, one place behind her. Both turn up on almost any page. The row "he she her she the" sets them side by side.

  • Only the h goes tall. A finished she with no tall letter is missing half of its first sound.
  • The American Dialect Society voted she word of the millennium in 2000: English had no she before the year 1000.
  • "She sells shells." is a listening line. Say it slowly first: s and sh take turns.

Questions and answers

What should a she sight word worksheet practice first?

The sh. Have the child say the sound and point to its two letters. Then trace she, fill the row "sh_ s_e _he" on the board and write one sentence. Tracing alone lets a child draw three shapes without linking the first two.

Why does the e in she say its name?

Nothing follows it, as in he, me, we and be. Add a consonant and the e turns short: shed, shell. Every word in the row "me she we she be" ends the same way, so the pattern is heard five times.

What is the difference between she and her?

She does the action and her owns or receives it: She fed her cat. A child who says "Her can run" is using the second for the first. Read she lines aloud together and let the ear settle it.
