The sight words and their practice lines

The word on its own 3

  • on 2 letters for 2 sounds: o, n. Both letters sit between the dashed line and the base line, with nothing tall and no tail.
  • On on Capital O beside small o: the same round shape at two heights. The capital is needed for lines such as On we go.
  • on on on on Four to trace in one row. Have the child touch the o first every time, so the hand learns which end the word starts from.

Spot-the-word rows 4

  • on no on in on Circle on 3 times. No is the same two letters in the other order, and in swaps the o for an i.
  • on of on off on Circle on 3 times. Of and off open with the same round o, so the second letter decides.
  • one on own on an Circle on 2 times. One and own both begin with o-n, yet neither is said on. An swaps the first letter.
  • won on son on ton Circle on 2 times. Won, son and ton hide the word behind one more letter, and in all three the o sounds like the u in sun.

Missing-letter rows 3

  • h_p _n t_p The same letter is missing from all three words: hop on top. Say the phrase aloud, then write the o three times.
  • o_ _n o_ _n One letter is missing each time: n, then o, then n, then o. With a two-letter word that is the whole spelling in two steps.
  • on o_ _n __ A fading row. Copy the word, fill one gap, fill the other, then write both letters with nothing to look at.

Phrases: on top of something, worn, or switched on 11

  • hold on The o in hold says its name, and the o in on does not. One letter, two sounds, side by side.
  • hop on Both words sound out, and both are spelled with an o. What a bus driver might say.
  • on a log Log sounds out. A phrase to draw: a frog, a bug or a child on a log.
  • on and on The word twice in three words. It means without stopping: the rain went on and on.
  • on his head The s in his sounds like z, and the ea in head says a short e.
  • on my lap Lap sounds out. My ends in a y that says the name of the letter i.
  • on my own Own looks like on with a w in the middle, but it is said with a long o. The phrase means with no help.
  • on or off The two sides of a switch. Off doubles its f, and or has the sound of for without the f.
  • on the bus On as in riding. Bus sounds out: b, u, s. We say on the bus but in the car.
  • on top On tells where. Top sounds out: t, o, p. Both words are spelled with the same round o.
  • put it on On comes last here and means wearing. The u in put is the u of push, not the u of cut.

How this list was compiled: Every line was written for this site on 2026-09-18 and read aloud for sense. No line is taken from a published sight word list or workbook, and the page claims no list or grade level for the word. Spellings were checked against the macOS system word list on 2026-09-18. On read backwards is no

A child who has not settled on reading left to right says no for on and writes on for no. The Oxford English Corpus list on Wikipedia ranks on 14th among English words, so the mix-up turns up often. Put a green dot under the o and say start at the dot. The sheet's grid mixes on with no and in to drill that.

One small word, two jobs

In on the bus and on my lap the word says where and comes before the thing. In Put your hat on. and Turn the light on. it comes last and means worn or working. Ask which job it is doing. Press Show all 34 practice lines near the foot of this page for more.

Questions and answers

What belongs on a good on sight word worksheet?

Three things: the word to trace, a grid that mixes it with no, and a sentence to finish. This sheet has all three. The grid makes the child check which letter comes first. Tracing alone will not fix a reversal.

Should on and no be taught in the same week?

Not at first. Teach one until the child reads it without a pause, then set the two side by side. The sentence No, it is not on. holds both words, so keep it as the last check.

Can the on sight word be sounded out?

Yes: a short o, then n. Accent changes the vowel a little, so teach the spelling and let the child say it the local way. What needs drilling is reading it left to right, so it never comes out as no.
