How it works
Two letters, two sounds, and we still goes wrong: tip the w over and it reads me. This sight word we worksheet has the child trace it and circle it among "me", "he", "wet" and "be". They finish the sentence ___ can go now.

A letter whose name gives nothing away
Most letter names hand a child the sound: b says bee, m says em. W does not. Wikipedia traces the name double-u to the time the letter was written as two u's. The name starts with a d sound, so teach the w sound alone first. The shape is the second trap: an m is close to a w the other way up.
We means me plus somebody
We is I plus at least one more person, which a child can act out. Say "Sam and I", then swap in "We". Wiktionary also lists a colloquial we meaning everyone being addressed. Teachers use that one all day: "We walk in the hall." The Oxford English Corpus ranking on Wikipedia places we 27th.
- Wet, web and went all begin with we. One more letter closes the e in and turns it short.
- For most speakers whee sounds exactly like we. Read "Whee, we go down." at the top of the slide.
- A w starts at its top left and slants down. An m would drop straight.
Questions and answers
What goes on a we sight word worksheet for a child who writes me?
The sheet's find grid hides we among me and he. On the board, write "we me we he we" and name each first letter. "Pick me and we win." holds both words. Press it under Pick from the 14 sentences with "we" to print it.
Can we be sounded out?
Yes: w, then a long e, the open e that also ends he, be and she. Practice it until it is instant anyway. A child writing about a class trip needs it in nearly every line: "We had fun."
What are good sentences for the sight word we?
Ones about the class itself: "We are a team." "We sit in a ring." "We like to sing." To print one, press it under Pick from the 14 sentences with "we". Nine of the 14 start with We, so the capital W gets practice too.
