How it works
These sight word sentences are short enough for a beginning reader to finish. Each has 3 to 7 words, built from 78 common words plus a picture word such as dog or bus. The box opens with 3 sample lines you can delete. Add more from the list of 164 under it, or type your own. Each prints twice to trace, with an empty row for writing it alone.

Pick sentences that match the words you have taught
Open Pick from the 164 sight word sentences, under the box. Press a line to add it after the sample lines. Press it again to take it out. The full list under the tool holds 114 sentences and 50 phrases. There, each line names the word it was written for and its length. It also names any word outside our 78 that a child must sound out. 57 of the sentences use nothing but the 78 words. Or type your own: up to 12 lines of 80 characters.
How many sentences fit on a page
The sheet opens at Medium, 14 mm, with two rows to trace and one empty row for each sentence. That puts 3 sentences on a Letter or A4 page, and a full box of 12 runs to 4 pages. Open More options and set Rows to trace to 1 row, and 5 fit. At Large, 19 mm, about half of our lines spill onto a second row in portrait. Set Direction to Landscape, also under More options, to give them room. With one row to trace, a landscape page holds 2 sentences.
Paper today, a PDF for later
Press Print worksheet and pick your printer. To keep easy sight word sentences pdf files for a take-home folder, choose Save as PDF in that dialog. Your lines stay in this browser between visits, and Start again brings back the sample lines. Share link copies a link that opens the same sheet on a colleague's device. It holds the sentences, so write them without pupil names.
- Read first, then trace. The child points under each word and reads the sentence aloud, traces it, writes it on the empty row, then reads it once more.
- For beginner kindergarten sight word sentences worksheets, stay with the 3-word set, such as I can jump and Look at me, until the child reads those without stopping.
- Make a cut-up sentence. Print one line in Solid grey at Large with Direction set to Landscape, cut between the words and shuffle them. The capital letter and the end mark show the child which words go first and last.
- Use sight word phrases to get past word-by-word reading. Chunks such as in the box, up and down and as big as are read in one breath. Put 5 on a sheet and reread them until they sound like talking.
- If a sentence holds a word the child has never written, give that word a row of its own on the sight word worksheets page the day before.
Questions and answers
Which sight word sentences for kindergarten should come first?
Start with sentences that share a frame and change one word: I see a cat, I see the dog, I see the moon. The child meets I and see over and over while the last word keeps each line new. Leave questions and sentences of 6 words or more for later in the year.
Why do some sentences use words that are not sight words?
A sentence made only of words like the, of and was gives a child nothing to picture. One noun such as dog, hat or bus gives it a meaning, and it can be sounded out or matched to a drawing. For none at all, use the set marked only sight words, which includes We like to play and He said no.
Can I type my own sentences?
Yes. Delete the 3 sample lines in the box and type your own, one per line. A long line continues on the next row. A sentence about the class pet or this week's story gives a child a reason to read it.
What is the difference between a sight word phrase and a sentence?
A sentence has a capital letter, a verb and an end mark: The cat is in the box. A phrase is a piece of one: in the box. Little words such as of, from and with mean more inside a chunk than alone on a card, and reading in chunks is part of reading smoothly. The list has 50 phrases of 2 to 4 words.
Are these sight word sentences worksheets free for a whole class?
Yes. Print as many copies as you need for a class, a tutoring group or home. There is no sign-up. Each page carries your sentences, the guide lines, an optional Name and Date line and a small credit line.
