Match a set to your word wall
Three-letter Words is the gentlest start. Five more sets sort the words by job: action words, people and pointing words, question and time words, color, number and size words, and joining and place words. Tricky Spellings gathers 38 words in which a letter does not make its usual sound, such as Said and Could.
Why each clue is a sentence
A word such as The has no picture, and a beginner cannot read a dictionary-style clue. So one word fills each gap: "Yesterday ___ Monday." Where two words of the same length would fit, a rhyme settles it: "Kiss, miss, ___. ___ is my desk."
- Read the clue aloud and say "blank" at the gap. Children often hear the missing word before they can spell it.
- Teach counting squares first. They has 4 letters and There has 5, so the grid rules out the wrong one.
- For a literacy center, print 4 puzzles from one set, pressing New puzzle between prints, and slip them into page protectors for dry-erase markers.
