How it works

This handwriting worksheet generator turns any words or sentences you type into a tracing sheet. Choose one of 5 letter styles, from upright print to looped cursive, and a letter height. Letters can be dotted, outlined or solid grey. Rows to trace, guide lines and Letter or A4 paper are under More options. The preview shows every page before you print, and what you type stays in this browser.

Type the text and choose the letters

Type in the Words or sentences to practice box, up to 12 lines of 80 characters. A long line wraps word by word, so a full sentence becomes two or three rows. Or open Pick from the 40 practice lines and press a line to put it in the box. Letter style offers Print, Print with tails, Slanted print, Modern cursive and Looped cursive. Under Letters, Dotted suits tracing and Outlined lets a child write inside the shape. Solid grey works as a model to copy on the row below.

Height, rows and guide lines

Letter height is the distance from the baseline to the top line: 10, 14, 19 or 26 mm. In Print on Letter paper that gives 15, 11, 8 or 6 rows a page. A4 fits one more row at the three smaller sizes. The rest is under More options. Rows to trace gives each line of text 1 to 8 traced rows, with an empty row after them for writing alone. Under Guide lines, Three lines shows the top, a dashed middle and the baseline. Baseline only looks like notebook paper. No lines leaves plain letters.

Check the pages, then print

The line under the preview counts the pages, and Previous and Next step through them. A sheet stops at 40 pages. Under More options, set Direction to Landscape for longer rows, which helps with large letters. A word too wide for a row is squeezed to fit, and the tool tells you which word it was. The Name and Date line can be unticked there too. Press Print worksheet, then pick your printer or save a PDF. Share link copies a link that carries the text and all the settings.

  • For print styles, open More options and tick Show a dot where each letter starts. Where the pencil begins is where most habits go wrong.
  • Match the height to the writer, not the grade. If a child's own letters overshoot the top line, go up a size for a few weeks.
  • Build a sheet around one letter family: round letters (a, c, d, g, o, q) one week, tall letters the next.
  • For copywork, set Letters to Solid grey and Rows to trace to 1 row, and keep the empty row. The child reads the model and writes it below.
  • Paste this week's spelling words, then use the same list in the word search maker for a second sheet.

Questions and answers

What letter height should I choose?

Extra large (26 mm) and Large (19 mm) suit children who are still learning letter shapes, usually preschool and kindergarten. Medium (14 mm) suits first and second grade. Small (10 mm) suits older children and adults. For comparison, wide ruled notebook paper has lines 8.7 mm apart, so Small is still a little roomier than a notebook.

Is it a cursive handwriting worksheet maker too?

Yes. Modern cursive is a simple joined style with few loops. Looped cursive is the traditional American style with loops on letters such as b, f and l. The letters connect in both, in any word you type. Starting dots are hidden for cursive, because in a joined word only the first letter has a free start.

Does it match the handwriting program my school uses?

Not exactly. The 5 styles are open-licensed school fonts, not the letters of any one program. Print is upright, like the manuscript letters of Zaner-Bloser. Slanted print and Print with tails are nearer to D'Nealian, which slants its print letters and adds small tails to prepare for joining. Compare a, k, q and y with your school's letter chart before you print a class set.

How many sentences fit on one page?

It depends on the height and the rows. In Print at Small, the 9-word sentence about the quick brown fox takes 2 rows. Its 3 traced copies and an empty row fit on one Letter page with room left over. At Medium the same sentence wraps to 3 rows, and the same settings need 2 pages.

Is what I type saved or sent anywhere?

It is saved in this browser only, so the sheet is still there when you come back, and nothing is sent to us. Start again clears it. The share link is different: it carries the typed text, so anyone with the link can read it. Keep student names out of a sheet you share as a link.
