The h is the sound that slips
He is regular: h, then a long e. Wikipedia's Oxford English Corpus table puts it sixteenth among English words. Its weak spot is the h. Wiktionary writes the unstressed form with the h in brackets, because in running speech it may go unsaid. A quick Did he win? sounds like two words. Said last, as in who is he, the h comes back.
Capital H in a statement, small h in a question
Eight of the 12 sentences near the foot of this page, under The sight words and their practice lines, open with He. The other four are questions, where he moves back and keeps a small h. Write He can see us. above Can he see us? and have the child circle the letter that changed size.
- A small h starts just under the top line. Started lower it makes an n, and the word reads ne.
- Write she, the, her and they on the board. Children box the he inside each: two letters, four sounds.
- He stands in for a name. Read Ben hid my hat, then He hid my hat. Ask who he is.
Questions and answers
My student mixes up he and she. Which lines help?
Write the row the he she he they on the board and ask for 2 circles, then trace he and she. A finger over the s makes he appear. Lifting it brings she back.
Can the he sight word be sounded out, or is it learned whole?
It sounds out. The single e at the end says its name, as in me, we, be and she, so the five can be taught together. What takes practice is speed, and hearing the word when its h fades.
What are good sentences for the sight word he?
Ones where every other word sounds out: He fed the hen. He sat by me. He hid my hat. Add one question, Did he win?, so the child meets the small h too.
