The sight words and their practice lines

The word on its own 3

  • look 4 letters for 3 sounds: l, then two o's that share the short sound of book and foot, then k. The l and the k stand tall at the ends and the two o's sit low between them.
  • Look look Capital L beside small l. The capital has a foot along the base line; the small one is a plain stick. Look takes the capital when it opens an order.
  • look look look look Four to trace in one row. Every word should have the same outline: tall, short, short, tall. The k is the letter to watch, because its two arms have to touch the stick, not float beside it.

Spot-the-word rows 4

  • book look cook took Circle look 1 time. All four rhyme and share ook, so only the first letter tells them apart. Read the row aloud to hear the short oo four times.
  • look like look lake Circle look 2 times. Like and lake keep the l and the k, so a child who reads by the outside letters will guess wrong. Both end in a silent e that look does not have.
  • loop look lot look Circle look 2 times. Loop opens with the same three letters, but its oo is the long sound of moon. Lot stops at one o.
  • luck look lock look Circle look 2 times. Luck and lock have one vowel and ck where look has two o's and a lone k.

Missing-letter rows 3

  • l__k _oo_ First the middle, then the outside. The child writes oo, then l and k. The tall letters go at the two ends.
  • l_ok lo_k loo_ One letter is missing each time: o, then o again, then k. Two of the three answers are o, because a child who spells by ear hears one vowel and may write one o.
  • look lo__ l___ A row that gives less help at each step: the whole word, then its first half, then only the l.

Look and the small word after it 11

  • a good look Good and look share the short oo sound, so this row is that sound twice. Good ends in d, look in k.
  • look at this Look often takes a small word after it that says which way. At and this sound out, and this opens with th.
  • look both ways The rule at the curb. Both has a long o and ends in th. Ways has ay, which says the name of the letter a.
  • look down Down has ow, two letters for one sound, as in cow and now.
  • look for it With for, look means search. It sounds out, and for has or, one sound from two letters.
  • look in the book Look and book rhyme and share three letters, so the child writes ook twice. In sounds out.
  • look inside Inside is in plus side. Its second i says its name because of the silent e.
  • look out A warning, not an order to use the eyes. Out has ou, the sound of ow in down.
  • look up Up sounds out: u, p. Pair this row with look down and have the class do both.
  • stop, look, listen Three orders with two commas. Stop sounds out. Listen has a silent t, so show it whole.
  • take a look Here look is a thing, not an action. Take has a silent e that makes the a say its name.

How this list was compiled: Every line was written for this site on 2026-09-18 and read aloud for sense. No line is taken from a published sight word list or workbook, and the page claims no list or grade level for the word. Spellings were checked against the macOS system word list. The counts in the spot-the-word rows and the word counts of the sentences were worked out. That look is said with the short vowel of foot, that some northern English accents keep the older long vowel, that look and Luke sound alike in Scotland and Northern Ireland, that luck is a homophone across most of northern England, and that look can mean search for and seem as well as use the eyes: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/look (checked 2026-09-19). That the short oo sound is most regular in words ending in ook, such as book, cook and hook, that good, foot and wood have it too, and that moon-type words kept the long vowel: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonological_history_of_English_close_back_vowels (checked 2026-09-19). Sound notes describe general American pronunciation unless they say otherwise. Licence: own work

How it works

Look spells one short sound with two o's: the oo of book, not of moon. This sight word look worksheet has the child trace it, circle it among like, book, lock and took, and finish ___ at me.

Two o's, one short sound

The oo in look is the short sound of foot. Wikipedia's history of these vowels says that sound turns up most regularly in words ending in ook: book, cook, hook. Write the row book look cook took on the board. It does not print. Press Show all 33 practice lines near the foot of this page to find it. Accents differ: Wiktionary records that in Scotland and Northern Ireland look sounds like the name Luke.

Look or like? Check the middle, not the ends

Look and like open with l and close on the sound of k. The middle settles it: two round o's in look, an i before the k in like and a silent e after it. You look like Dad. sets them side by side.

  • Draw a dot inside each o of a traced look to make two eyes: a reminder that there are two.
  • The small word after look changes its meaning: look for is a search, look out a warning. Act each out.
  • Write stop, look, listen before a walk, and have children say it at the curb.

Questions and answers

Why does my student read look as like?

The two words share a first letter, a k and a length. A child who checks only the ends cannot tell them apart. Cover the ends and compare what is left. Then write look like look lake on the board and ask for 2 circles.

Is the oo in look the same as the oo in moon?

Not in most accents. Moon has the long sound, and look has the short one of book, good and foot. English spells both with oo, so each word has to be learned. Words ending in ook are the safest bet for the short one.

Can the look sight word be sounded out?

Yes, once oo is taught as a team with two sounds. L and k are plain. The child then has to pick the short oo, and the rhymes book, cook and took all point the same way.
