One letter makes a new word
Can and cap change the last letter; cot and cut change the middle one. The rows cat can cat cap cat and cot cat cut cat make the child look at every letter. Hat and sat rhyme with cat: only the first letter changes.
- Say the three sounds slowly while sliding the tiles c, a and t together.

- Dictate We fed the cat. and have the child tap one finger for each word.

Is cat a sight word if it can be sounded out?

How do I teach cat and can apart?
Point to the last letter. Cat ends in t, which goes tall; can ends in n, which stays short. The row cat can cat cap cat has three cats to circle and two words to leave alone.
