The sight words and their practice lines

The word on its own and with endings 4

  • play 4 letters for 3 sounds: p, l, and ay, where two letters share one long a. P and y hang below the base line, l stands tall and a sits in the middle, so the word uses every guide line.
  • Play play Capital P beside small p. The capital stands on the base line with nothing below it. The small p starts at the dashed line and hangs down.
  • play play play Three to trace in one row. Watch the two tails: the p and the y both drop below the base line, and neither should reach the row underneath.
  • play plays played The word with two endings. The y never changes: add s, or add ed. Playing keeps it too. Compare cry, where the y turns into an i in cries and cried.

Spot-the-word rows 4

  • day play say play Circle play 2 times. Day and say end in the same a-y and rhyme with it. Only play has two letters in front.
  • pay play lay play pal Circle play 2 times. Pay and lay each drop one letter of the blend, which is how the word comes out when a child hears only one of its first two sounds. Pal has p, a and l but no y.
  • plan play plum play Circle play 2 times. Plan and plum open with the same p-l blend, so the ending has to be read and not guessed.
  • pray play clay play Circle play 2 times. Pray swaps the l for an r, and clay swaps the p for a c. Both are a blend plus ay, so every letter has to be checked.

Missing-letter rows 3

  • pl__ __ay p__y Two letters are missing each time: first the vowel team ay, then the blend pl, then the two letters in the middle.
  • pla_ pl_y p_ay _lay One letter is missing each time, working back from the y to the p. The third gap is the one to watch: the l is the letter children leave out.
  • play pla_ pl__ p___ The word fades from the right one letter at a time, until only the p is left as a clue.

Games, places and music 12

How this list was compiled: Every line was written for this site on 2026-09-18 and read aloud for sense. No line is taken from a published sight word list or workbook, and the page claims no list or grade level for the word. Spellings were checked against the macOS system word list; the inflected forms plays, played and pups are not headwords there and were checked one by one. The counts in the spot-the-word rows and the word counts of the sentences were worked out. That play is said with a long a and rhymes with day, that its forms are plays, playing and played, and that its senses include taking part in a game, making music on an instrument and acting on a stage: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/play (pronunciation, rhymes and verb senses, checked 2026-09-19). That they rhymes with play and day: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/they (rhymes line, checked 2026-09-19). Which letters hang below the base line and where the pencil starts each one was read from the tool's own table for the Print letter style. Sound notes describe general American pronunciation. How it works

Play has three sounds, and the l is the one children lose, writing pay or paly. This sight word play worksheet has them trace it, circle it among pay, plan, day and lay, and finish We ___ in the sun.

Read the full guide

Three sounds, and the l goes missing

P and l sit so close together that a child spelling by ear hears one sound and writes pay. Another hears both and swaps them into paly. The ending is kinder: a and y share one long a, the pair that closes day, say and may. The word they ends in the same sound and spells it ey: see "They play tag."

A word that uses every guide line

In print letters p and y hang below the base line, l reaches the top line and a stays under the middle one. Two tails drop and one stick stands tall. The y is steady too. Wiktionary gives plays, played and playing, all with the y in place, unlike cry, which turns into cries and cried.

  • Dictate pay, play and lay in that order. A child who writes all three has heard the blend.
  • Read "I play the drum." and "We saw a play." and ask what the word means each time.
  • "He plays and I play." sets the bare word beside its s form. Ask which one goes with he.

Questions and answers

My student writes paly or pay. What should I do?

Say the word slowly, one finger for each sound: p, l, ay. Three fingers, the last for two letters. On the board, write the row "pla_ pl_y p_ay _lay" from the full list near the bottom of this page. The third gap is the l.

Is play a word to sound out or to learn whole?

Both, in turn. Every letter does its usual job once a and y are known as a team. Until then, show the word whole. The row "day play say play" and the line "We may play all day." bridge the two.

What are good sentences for the sight word play?

Ones about the child's own day: Can I play too? Did you play today? My cat will not play. Each keeps play as the only hard word, so the effort goes to the blend. Sentences like these can go on the sheet, but rows cannot.
