How this list was compiled: Own list, put together for this site on 2026-09-18: 78 common early-reading words, the same 78 that have a single-word worksheet page here. It is not a copy of any published sight word list and it claims no grade level. The spelling notes and the three look-alike words beside each word were written for this site; every word and look-alike was checked by script against the macOS system word list (from Webster's Second International) on 2026-09-18 (the verb forms has and held are not headwords there and were checked by hand). Sound notes describe general American pronunciation. That "the" is the most common word in English: Oxford English Corpus ranking as given at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Most_common_words_in_English (checked 2026-09-18). That "said", "was" and "has" are standard examples of words with an unexpected letter sound: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sight_word (checked 2026-09-18). Licence: own work

How this list was compiled: Written for this site on 2026-09-18: 114 sentences and 50 phrases. 78 of the sentences are the read-and-copy sentences from this site's single-word sight word worksheets, one for each of the 78 words; the rest were written for this page. The sight word list they are built from is this site's own list of 78 common early-reading words (see the sight word worksheets page), not a published list. Word counts, the words marked as outside the list and the "every word is on the list" lines were worked out on the same day, and every sight word was checked to be the target of at least one sentence. Each line was read aloud for sense. No line names a real person; Mom and Dad are the only people in them. Licence: own work

How it works

Make free printable sight word worksheets from the words your class is learning this week. Type them one per line, or press them in Pick from the 78 sight words, from I and the to could and where. Each word is printed to trace across a row of guide lines, with an empty row under it for writing alone. Four words fill one Letter or A4 page.

Sight word practice worksheets from your words

Type up to 40 words. Or open Pick from the 78 sight words and press the ones you want. The list sorts them into 7 sets such as question words and helper verbs. Then choose one of 5 letter styles and set Letters to Dotted, Outlined or Solid grey. Dotted suits sight word tracing in the first weeks. Solid grey works later as a model to copy underneath.

How many words fit on a page

The sheet opens at the Large letter height, 19 mm from the baseline to the top line. Under More options, Rows to trace is set to 1 row, with one empty row after it. That puts 4 words on a page, and a fifth starts page 2. At Medium, 14 mm, 5 words fit. Each word repeats across its row as often as there is room, so a short word such as my gets more turns than little.

Questions and answers

Which sight words should I put on a worksheet?

Use the words from your reading program first, because its books are written around them. With no list to follow, start with short, common words such as I, a, the, see, can and like, which let children read whole sentences early. The 78 words under the tool are our own selection. They are not a copy of any published list and they claim no grade level.

How do I create sight word worksheets for one word only?

Type that one word in the Words box, and it repeats to fill the whole page. To make sight word worksheet pages for several words at once, type them all. Then open More options and tick Give every word a page of its own. Each word starts a new page, up to 40 pages.

Are these tracing sight words worksheets really free?

Yes. There is no account and no limit on how many sheets you print. The free printable sight words worksheets are drawn in your browser from whatever you type, so nothing you type is sent to us. Every sight word printable carries only your words, the guide lines and an optional Name and Date line.

Is tracing enough to learn a sight word?

No. Tracing fixes the letter order and gives handwriting practice, but a child also needs to link the letters to sounds and to meet the word in sentences. Good sight word exercises mix all three. Point out the part that does not sound as expected, such as the ai in said. Trace and write the word, then read it in a short sentence.

What letter height should I use for kindergarten?

Start with Large, 19 mm, or Extra large, 26 mm, for children still learning to control a pencil, and keep all three guide lines on. Move to Medium, 14 mm, once letters sit on the baseline without help. In Print, Print with tails or Slanted print, tick Show a dot where each letter starts under More options.
