How it works

Until a child knows that o-u says ow, out gets spelled owt or read as our. This sight word out sheet has them trace it, circle it among our, oat, put and own, and finish The dog ran ___.

Read the full guide

Three letters, two sounds

O and u work as a team and say ow, the sound in ouch. Children who spell by ear write owt, because cow, how and now taught them o-w. Show where each spelling lives: o-w at the end of a word, o-u in front of a t, as in shout, pout and about. On the board, write the row "sh___ p___ ab___" from the full list near the bottom of this page. Only sentences can go on the sheet.

Out comes after the action

In speech out trails an action word: ran out, fell out, went out. So 8 of the 12 sentences end in it. Have the class act "The dog ran out." or "Take the trash out." and then write it.

  • Out and our differ only in the last letter: a tall t with a bar, or a short r.
  • Stand in the doorway for in and out, one step each way. Then read "Is Dad in or out?"
  • "My tooth fell out." is news a child wants to tell. Let them write it and draw the gap.

Questions and answers

Does the out sight word break the rules?

No. O-u saying ow is a regular pattern, shared by loud, shout, about and sound. Until a child has met that team, the word has to be held by sight. Teach the team, and out sounds out like any other word: ow, then t.

Why does my student write owt or ot?

Owt is a good sign: the child hears both sounds and picked the other spelling of ow. Ot means they have not learned that two vowels share one sound. For both, write "ou_ o_t _ut" on the board, and say the word before each gap.

What are good sentences for the sight word out?

Ones that end in it, where the word is easy to hear: The sun is out. Let the cat out. The lights went out. Then add one where it sits in the middle, such as I am out of glue.
