The sight words and their practice lines

The word on its own 3

  • at 2 letters for 2 sounds: a, t. The a stays under the dashed line and the t stands up past it, so the word has a low half and a tall half.
  • At at Capital A beside small a. The capital is needed when the time or place comes first, as in At six we eat.
  • at at at at at Five to trace in one row. Close every a at the top before its stick comes down. An open a reads as a u, and ut is just how the word sounds when it is said fast.

Spot-the-word rows 4

  • as at am at a Circle at 2 times. As, am and a all open with the same round letter. Only the tall crossed t makes it at.
  • at it at an at Circle at 3 times. It changes the first letter and an changes the last, so the child has to check both ends of the word.
  • ate at eat at tea Circle at 2 times. Ate, eat and tea are all built from a, t and e, and ate even starts with the whole word before it adds one letter.
  • cat at hat at sat Circle at 2 times. Cat, hat and sat all end in the word, but it only counts where no letter stands in front of it.
Show all 34 practice lines (27 more)

Missing-letter rows 3

  • a_ _t __ First the t is missing, then the a, then both, so the last one is written from memory.
  • a_ six a_ ten The same letter finishes both gaps: t. Read each time aloud once it is whole, at six and at ten.
  • c__ h__ s__ m__ Write at after each letter to build cat, hat, sat and mat. One small word finishes all four.

At a place, at a time, at a target 12

  • at bat A baseball phrase for the player whose turn it is to hit. Bat is the word itself with a b in front.
  • at home A place. The e on the end of home makes its o say its name.
  • at last A set phrase that means in the end. Both words have the short a of cat.
  • at lunch A time of the school day. Lunch sounds out if the child knows c-h.
  • at my desk A place. Desk sounds out and ends in the blend s-k.
  • at night A time. The i-g-h in night says the name of the letter i.
  • at school A place. School is a word to learn whole: its s-c-h says sk.
  • at six A time. Six sounds out, and its x says ks.
  • at the end A place or a time: the end of the line, or the end of the day. End sounds out.
  • at the zoo A place. The two o's in zoo say oo, as they do in moon.
  • point at it A target. At and it stand side by side here, so the child can see that only the first letter differs.
  • wave at me A target: the wave is aimed at someone. The e on wave makes the a say its name.

How this list was compiled: Every line was written for this site on 2026-09-18 and read aloud for sense. No line is taken from a published sight word list or workbook, and the page claims no list or grade level for the word. Spellings were checked against the macOS system word list. The counts in the spot-the-word rows and the word counts of the sentences were worked out. That at has a strong form with the a of cat and a weak form whose vowel is reduced, that the weak form sounds the same as it in some accents, and that the @ sign is read as at: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/at (pronunciation, homophones and noun sense, checked 2026-09-19). That at is one of the words that are reduced in running speech but said in full at the end of a sentence: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stress_and_vowel_reduction_in_English (checked 2026-09-19). In a sentence, at fades toward it

At is 2 letters for 2 sounds. The trouble starts inside a sentence. Wiktionary gives the word a weak form with a murmured vowel, which in some accents sounds the same as it. A child who spells by ear then writes Look it me. Wikipedia lists at among the words said in full at the end of a sentence, so read What can I look at? aloud first.

The word that finishes cat, hat and sat

At is the tail of a word family. Write the row c__ h__ s__ m__ on the board. The child writes at four times to build cat, hat, sat and mat. The row cat at hat at sat asks the opposite: circle at only where it stands alone.

  • Sort the phrases into three piles: a place (at home), a time (at six) and a target (wave at me).
  • Dictate it, at, at, it in mixed order. The child holds up an a or an i card before writing.
  • Show the @ sign in a made-up email address. It is read aloud as at.

Questions and answers

Should at come before cat, hat and sat, or after?

Before, or alongside. A child who knows at on sight reads cat as c plus at, quicker than blending three sounds. The sentence "A cat sat at my feet." holds all three. Press it under Pick from the 12 sentences with "at" to print it.

Why does my student write it when I say at?

Inside a sentence at carries no stress and its a fades, so Look at me can sound like Look it me. Say the word alone, stretch the a, then write the row at it at an at and ask for 3 circles.

Is at a sight word or a decodable word?

Decodable: short a, then t. It is also number 20 in the Oxford English Corpus ranking on Wikipedia, so it pays to know it at a glance. Sound it out first, then practice until the tapping stops.
