How it works
Said fast, the word or shrinks to "er", so children leave out the o. This sight word or worksheet has them trace it, circle it among on, of, our and for, and finish the sentence Is it red ___ blue?

Two letters, one sound
The r takes over the o, so the pair is one sound. The same "or" sits inside for, corn, fork and horn. The row "f__ c__n f__k h__n", in the full list near the bottom of this page, asks for it four times. Only sentences can go on the sheet, so rows are for the board. Wiktionary gives the American weak form as er, so "yes or no" comes out as "yes er no".
Every line is a choice to answer
Or means little until two things stand beside it, so the phrases are pairs, from "hot or cold" to "heads or tails". Read "Is it mine or his?" and answer aloud. For "Will it sink or float?" fill a tub, guess, then drop in a cork.
- A print r is an n that stops early. Let the curve reach the base line and "or" becomes "on".
- After writing a pair such as "cat or dog", have the child circle their own answer.
- Keep the row "or oar or ore or" for strong readers. In most accents all three sound the same.
Questions and answers
Why does my student write r or er for or?
That is what they hear. In speech the word shrinks to a quick er: "cat er dog". Say the pair slowly, one word per finger, and the o returns. Write "yes __ no" on the board and let the child fill the gap from memory.
My student mixes up or, on and of. What helps?
All three have two letters and start with o, so the second letter decides. The r stops in the air, n drops to the line and f goes tall. Write the row "or on or of or" on the board and ask for 3 circles.
Can the sight word or be sounded out?
Yes, once o-r is taught as a team with one sound, the one in "for" and "corn". Tapping o, then r, gives two sounds and no word. Teach the team first and "or" becomes the shortest word that uses it.
