Your is the owning form of you, and the spelling shows it: y-o-u, then r. A child who can write you is one letter from done. Wiktionary gives American speakers three ways to say the word, close to yor, yoor and yur. Wikipedia adds a weak form, yer, which comes out in "Get your lunch." On the board, the row "you you_ our _our" builds it from you, then from our.

The word inside classroom directions

Children seldom reach for your themselves. They hear it all day from a teacher: "Get your lunch." "Sit on your mat." "Write your name." Under Pick from the 12 sentences with "your", five are directions like these. The class can act one out, then write it.

  • Y alone has a tail. It drops below the base line while o, u and r sit above.
  • Hold up the child's hat and say "your hat". Hold up yours and say "my hat". Then swap speakers.
  • Our is your without the y. A child who swaps them needs the row "our your four your" on the board.

Questions and answers

When should I teach you're next to the your sight word?

Once "your" is solid. The two sound alike, and Wiktionary calls writing "your" for "you're" a common mistake in written English. Say "you are" where the word goes. If it fits, write "you're". On the board, the row "your you're yours" is for that stage.

Why does my student spell your as yor or ur?
