How it works
Alone, our sounds like hour. Hurried, it sounds like are, which children then write in its place. This sight word our sheet has them trace it, circle it among out, are, or and hour, and finish This is ___ house.

Hour when slow, are when fast
Wiktionary gives "our" a strong form that matches hour and a weak one that matches are. It records "our" as a misspelling of "are". So "This is are house" is an honest mistake by ear. On the board, write the row "our are our hour" from the full list near the bottom of this page. Only sentences can go on the sheet. The Oxford English Corpus list on Wikipedia ranks the word 86th.
Out with a new last letter
A child who reads out knows most of our: o-u says ow in both. The rhyme row "our h___ s___ fl___" shows the same three letters keeping their sound in hour, sour and flour. Your, four and pour hold them too but say or.
- Try "my" in the gap. "This is my house" makes sense, so the word is our. "We my six" fails.
- Our needs a thing after it. Alone at the end it grows an s: Our pup is all ours.
- Teach our beside we. Sweep a hand around the group for we, then point at something shared for our.
Questions and answers
Why does my student write are when the word is our?
In quick speech the two sound the same, and a child spelling by ear has nothing else to go on. Give them meaning instead: our answers whose, and are does not. Dictate "We are in our room." slowly, then ask which word tells whose.
Can our be sounded out?
In its slow form, yes: o-u says ow, as in out and house, and the r follows. The hurried version that matches "are" cannot be, so have children whisper the careful ow-er whenever they spell it.
What is the difference between our and hour?
They sound the same when said slowly. Our tells whose, and hour is a length of time, with a silent h. The sentence "Our hour is up." holds both, so have the child circle the word that tells whose.
