Questions and answers
Why does my student write jup for jump?
The m is the hardest of the four sounds to feel, because the lips are already shut for the p. Have the child say jump slowly and pinch the nose halfway through. The hum stops, since m comes out through the nose.
Should jump be sounded out or learned whole?
Sounded out. Every letter says its usual sound, with no silent letter. It gets handed over whole only because four sounds in a row, two pressed together at the end, are a lot for a beginner. Tap j, u, m, p on four fingers.
What are good sentences for the sight word jump?
Ones the child can act out: I can jump up. Jump over the log. Frogs can jump far. Add Do not jump yet. for the class that moves too soon, and Can you jump high? to practice a question.
