How this list was compiled: Every line was written for this site on 2026-09-19 and read aloud for sense. No line is taken from a published sight word list or workbook, and the page claims no list or grade level for the word. Spellings were checked against the macOS system word list on 2026-09-19; the plurals that list leaves out (pigs, bears, bags, cheers, wishes, wheels, feet, trees, hens, cats) and o'clock were checked one by one. The counts in the spot-the-word rows and the word counts of the sentences were worked out, as was the fact that three and there are made of the same five letters. That three has three sounds (th, r, long e), and that tree and free sound the same as three in accents that turn th into t or f: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/three (pronunciation and homophones, checked 2026-09-19). That Old English wrote third as thridda: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/third (checked 2026-09-19). That o'clock is short for of the clock: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/o'clock (checked 2026-09-19). That a yard equals 3 feet: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yard (checked 2026-09-19). Two letter teams with an r squeezed between

Wiktionary writes three as three sounds: th, r and a long e. Th and ee are letter teams, and the r sits between them, where it is easy to lose. Drop it and the word reads thee. Drop the h and it reads tree. Wiktionary also lists tree and free as sound-alikes in accents that turn th into t or f. A child who says free will write free.

There and three use the same five letters

Write t, h, r, e, e on five scraps of paper and they spell three or there. Only the r and one e change places, so a child who reads by shape takes one for the other. The sentence "There are three." puts both on one row.

  • Third, thirteen and thirty belong to three, but the r has moved. Old English wrote third as thridda.
  • Phrases in the full list near the bottom of this page come in threes: triangle sides, tricycle wheels, feet in a yard.
  • The line "3 three 3 three" sets numeral beside word, so the child can count what they read.

Questions and answers

Why does my student write tree or free for three?

That is usually how the child says it. Wiktionary records both. Th needs the tongue between the teeth. Practice in a mirror. Then write the row "three tree three free" on the board and ask for 2 circles. Only sentences can go on the sheet.

How do I stop my student mixing up three and there?

Give each word a job. Three is a number, so it stands beside a 3. There points to a place. In "There are three." have the child underline the number word. Then write "three there three" on the board and ask for 2 circles.

Can the sight word three be sounded out?

Yes, by a child who knows two teams: th, the quiet one of thin, and ee. The r between them is the sound that gets lost, so tap th, r, ee on three fingers before writing.
