How it works
The sight word than is the comparing word, with the a of can, and children write then for it. The child traces than, circles it among then, that, thin and tan, and finishes A cat is smaller ___ a cow.

The a that hides
Said slowly, than has three sounds: the buzzing t-h of this, a short a, and n, so it rhymes with can and man. In a quick sentence the a fades. Wiktionary gives an unstressed form with a neutral vowel and lists then as sounding the same. That is why the spelling slips.
Look left for the comparing word
Than follows a word that compares: taller, bigger, more, less. Have the child read the word just before the gap. In I am taller than you. it is taller, so than is right. If nothing is being compared, the word is not than.
- Than rhymes with can and man. Say the three together, then write than.
- Hold up two pencils and ask which is longer. The answer needs than.
- Dictate Seven is more than five. and check the capital S.
Questions and answers
Can the sight word than be sounded out?
Yes, once t-h is one sound. After it come the short a of can and an n. Say it slowly: in quick speech the a is swallowed and the word seems to have no clear vowel.
Why does my student write then for than?
Because the two can sound alike. Wiktionary lists then as a homophone of than when than is said without stress. The ear cannot settle it, so teach the job: than compares two things. Then is the first decoy in the find grid.
Which words come before than?
Words that compare. Many end in e-r: taller, bigger, faster, older. More, less and better work the same way. Each of them comes before than in a phrase or sentence listed under the sheet.
