How it works
The a and silent e of are tell the ear nothing, so children write r or ar. This sight word are sheet has them trace it, circle it among our, art and ear, and finish We ___ at school.

Three letters, one sound, and an e that breaks its rule
Said alone in an American accent, are is the name of the letter r. A child who spells by ear writes r, or ar as in car. The e is no help: in care the same letters say air, because there the e does its usual job. Wiktionary lists both r and our as homophones of are, which is why are and our trade places in early writing. Sort them by job: our shows owning, are follows we, you and they.
Three pairs to copy first
The phrases in the list under the tool begin with we are, you are and they are. Type one into A sentence with it to print it. Copy these first, to tie "are" to the word before it.
- Are has no tall letter and no tail. If the r swells into an n, check every r.
- Hold up one pencil, then three. The child says The pencil is or The pencils are, then writes the verb.
- Children say we're long before they read we are. Say the short form, then tap out the two full words.
Questions and answers
Why does my student write r or ar for are?
Because that is all the ear reports. The word sounds like a letter name, and car, far and jar spell the same sound with two letters. Write the missing-letter row ar_ a_e _re on the board. It asks for the silent e first.
How do I teach are and our apart?
Saying them slowly may not help: many people say them alike. Tie each to its job: our comes before a thing we own, are after we, you or they. Then write are our are or are and ask for 3 circles.
Can are be sounded out?
Only the r. The a and the e do no work a beginner can predict, so are is learned whole. Link it to car and far, where a-r says the same sound, and treat the e as the part to remember.
