The sight words and their practice lines

The word on its own 3

  • like 4 letters for 3 sounds: l, long i, k. The e on the end is silent; it is there to make the i say its name. The l and the k go tall, and the i needs its dot.
  • Like like Capital L beside small l. The capital has a foot along the base line; the small l is a plain tall stick.
  • like like like Three to trace in one row. Have the child whisper the letter names l, i, k, e each time, so the silent e gets said even though it is not heard.

Spot-the-word rows 4

  • bike like hike like Circle like 2 times. Bike and hike rhyme with it and share its last three letters, so the first letter decides.
  • like lake like line Circle like 2 times. Lake swaps the i for an a, and line swaps the k for an n. Both keep the silent e, so the ending will not help.
  • like likes like liked Circle like 2 times. Likes and liked hold the whole word with an ending after the e. Only the bare word gets a circle.
  • look like lick like Circle like 2 times. Look has two round o's in the middle. Lick has the short i and ends in ck with no e after it.

  • lik_ li_e l_ke _ike One letter is missing each time: e, then k, then i, then l. The first gap is the silent e, the letter most often left off.
  • like li__ ____ A fading row. Copy the word, finish it from its first two letters, then write all four from memory.

  • I like Like as enjoy. A sentence starter: the child says the ending aloud, then writes it on the empty row. I is always a capital.
  • just like you Like as similar to. Just sounds out and ends in the blend s-t. You is a word to know whole.
  • like it Two short words. It sounds out: i, t. The i in it is short and the i in like is long, side by side.
  • like me Like as similar to: you are six, like me. Both words end in an e, silent in like and long in me.
  • like this Like as similar to. What a teacher says while showing how: hold the pencil like this. This starts with the t-h team.

  • We like the slide. 4 words. Like and slide follow one pattern: an i, one consonant, then a silent e that makes the i long.
  • What do you like? 4 words and a question mark. The empty row under it is a good place for the child to write an answer.

How this list was compiled: Every line was written for this site on 2026-09-18 and read aloud for sense. No line is taken from a published sight word list or workbook, and the page claims no list or grade level for the word. Spellings were checked against the macOS system word list on 2026-09-18; the inflected forms likes, liked, looks and plums and the word mom are not headwords there and were checked one by one. The counts in the spot-the-word rows and the word counts of the sentences were worked out. That like is said with a long i and rhymes with bike and hike, and that the verb (from Old English lician, to please) and the comparing word (from Old English gelic) began as two separate words: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/like (pronunciation, rhymes and etymology, checked 2026-09-18). That a final silent e can turn a short vowel into its long equivalent, and that phonics teaching calls it a magic, sneaky or bossy e: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_e (checked 2026-09-18). Sound notes describe general American pronunciation. Licence: own work

How it works

Like has four letters and three sounds, and children write the three they hear: lik. This sight word like worksheet has them trace it, circle it among lake, look, line and lick, and finish I ___ to play.

A silent e with a job to do

Like is l, long i, k, then a silent e. It reaches back over one consonant and makes the vowel say its name. Cover the e and the rest would be read with the short i of lick. The same pattern reads bike, ride, slide and mine. Press Show all 35 practice lines near the foot of this page to find them.

Two meanings, two sets of lines

In I like jam on a bun. the word means enjoy. In hop like a frog it means similar to. The two began as separate Old English words, lician (to please) and gelic (alike). Buzz like a bee, swim like a fish and run like the wind are the second kind, and good to act out.

  • Show what the e does with pairs: kit and kite, hid and hide, rid and ride.
  • He and she take likes. Write like likes like liked on the board, where only the bare word gets a circle.
  • Lick and lock end in ck. Like ends in k and an e. Ask which has a long vowel.

Questions and answers

Why does my student write lik or lick instead of like?

Both spell the sounds the child hears. Lik has nothing for the silent e, and lick borrows its ending from sick and pick. Show that the e makes the i long. Then write look like lick like on the board and ask for 2 circles.

Is like a word to sound out or to learn whole?

It sounds out once the silent e pattern has been taught. Before that it can be taught as a whole word, because children want to write I like much earlier. The practice is the same either way.

How do I help a child who mixes up like and look?

Both open with l and close on a k sound, so check the middle. Like has an i before the k, and look has two round o's. It looks like a bug. holds looks and like side by side. Have the child underline each.
