The sight words and their practice lines

The word on its own 3

  • do 2 letters for 2 sounds: d, then an o that says oo, as it does in to and who. The small d begins with the round of an o and ends with a tall stick, so both letters start the same way.
  • Do do Capital D beside small d. The capital starts with its stick and bows to the right. The small d starts with its round. A question such as Do we go now? needs the capital.
  • do do do do do Five to trace in one row. Say round, up, down for each d and round for each o, so the hand learns that the stick of the d comes last.

Spot-the-word rows 4

  • by do be do bed Circle do 2 times. By, be and bed start with b, whose stick comes before its round. In d the round comes first. Bed has one of each: b at the head, d at the foot.
  • do does do done do Circle do 3 times. Does and done begin with the whole word and then change its sound: their o says the short u of sun.
  • do go do to do so Circle do 3 times. Go and so end the same way, but their o says its name. To is the only other word in the row that rhymes with do.
  • dog do dot do dig Circle do 2 times. Dog and dot start with d-o and add one letter, and that letter turns the o into the short o of hot. Dig shares only the d.

Missing-letter rows 3

  • d_ _o d_ Fill in o, then d, then o. A child who spells by ear wants to write doo or du here, so say the word first and then name its two letters.
  • d_ t_ g_ s_ The same letter fills every gap. Read the four words back: in do and to the o says oo, and in go and so it says its name.
  • do d_ __ Copy the word, finish it, then write all of it from memory on the last two blanks.

Things to do, and do as a helper 12

  • do a trick Trick starts with the blend t-r and ends in ck, two letters for one k sound. A dog can do a trick, and so can a child with a coin.
  • do as I do The word twice in four words, once at each end. The s in as says z. A good line for a copy-me game.
  • do it It sounds out: i, t. Do does not, because its o says oo. Two words and four letters, the shortest phrase here.
  • do it again Again is a word to show whole. Clap a-gain as two beats before writing it.
  • do my best Best sounds out and ends in the blend s-t. My ends in a y that says long i.
  • do my job Job sounds out. Class jobs such as line leader or door holder give the child something real to say with it.
  • do not The long way to write don't. Not sounds out. In don't the o changes once more, to the long o of go.
  • do the dishes Here do means wash. Dishes is dish plus es: after sh the ending needs its e so it can be heard.
  • do you How most questions to a friend begin. Said fast, some speakers run the two words together so that the d and the y make a j sound.
  • how to do it To and do sit side by side and rhyme. How has the ow of cow, and it sounds out.
  • we do Two words of two letters, and neither has a short vowel: we ends in a long e and do ends in oo.
  • yes, I do An answer in three words. Do comes last, so it is said in full with a clear oo. Yes sounds out.

  • Do not run in here. 5 words. A class rule that starts with a capital D. Run and in sound out; here ends in a silent e.
  • Do pigs fly? 3 words. A silly question to answer aloud with No, pigs do not fly. Pigs sounds out; the y in fly says long i.

  • What do I do now? 5 words with do twice. The first do only helps to ask the question and is said lightly. The second is the action and is said in full.
  • What do you see? 4 words. Do sits second and is said lightly. What and you do not sound out either, so point under each word as it is read. See has a double e.

How this list was compiled: Every line was written for this site on 2026-09-18 and read aloud for sense. No line is taken from a published sight word list or workbook, and the page claims no list or grade level for the word. Spellings were checked against the macOS system word list; the plurals dishes and pigs are not headwords there and were checked one by one. The counts in the spot-the-word rows and the word counts of the sentences were worked out. That do in full is said with a long oo, that it has weak forms before a consonant and before a vowel, and that some speakers turn an unstressed do before a y sound into a j sound (written d'you): https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/do (pronunciation, checked 2026-09-19). That do is one of the words reduced inside a sentence but said in full at the end of one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stress_and_vowel_reduction_in_English (checked 2026-09-19). Where the pencil starts the small d, the small b and the small o was read from the tool's own table for the Print letter style. Sound notes describe general American pronunciation. Licence: own work

How it works

After go, no and so, a class expects o to say its name. Do does not. This sight word do sheet has the child trace it, circle it among to, go, so and no, and finish What ___ you see?

Read the full guide

Spelled like go, said like to

Do and to are the exceptions among the little o words, so teach them as a rhyming pair. Write the row d_ t_ g_ s_ on the board: one letter fills every gap and gives two sounds. It is near the foot of this page, under The sight words and their practice lines.

A helper that is said lightly

In What do you see? the word only helps ask the question. Wikipedia lists do among words that weaken inside a sentence and return in full at its end. So Yes, I do. has a clear oo. A child who spells by ear writes du or skips the word. Read What do I do now? aloud: the first do is light, the second full.

  • A printed d starts low, where its round begins, and a b starts at the top line.
  • Sing do re mi, where the same letters say doh, then ask What do you do? to hear both sounds.

Questions and answers

My student writes bo for do. Which line helps?

Write the row by do be do bed on the board. A small b starts with its stick and a small d with its round, and bed holds one of each. Have the child name the first stroke of every letter before writing.

Should does and don't go in the same week?

Better to wait. Each changes the vowel: does has the short u of sun, don't the long o of go. Here does and done only appear as look-alikes in one row, and do not stays two words.

Can the sight word do be sounded out?

The d can. The o says oo, which a beginner has no way to predict, so the word is learned whole. To and who share the surprise, so the three can be taught as a set.
