How it works

Three sounds, and a vowel to watch
But is b, short u, t, and rhymes with cut and nut. Bat, bit and bet differ only in the vowel, so the row but bat but bit but sends the eye to the middle letter. Written backward, but is tub, which is in the find grid.
The word that turns a sentence
But joins two ideas that pull against each other, as in He is small but fast. Read a sentence up to but and let the child guess how it ends. In quick speech the vowel fades: Wiktionary lists a weaker, unstressed form. The spelling stays b-u-t.
- Build but from its tiles, then read the tiles from right to left: tub.
- Say two halves, such as I ran and I was late, and let the child join them with but.
- Swap the middle tile for a, i and e to make bat, bit and bet.
Questions and answers
Why does my student write bat or bit for but?
The b and the t are right, so the slip is in the vowel. Say but, bat, bit slowly and listen to the middle. Then give the row but bat but bit but and ask for 3 circles.
Can the sight word but be sounded out?
Yes: three letters and three sounds, b, short u, t. Let the child blend it, then practice until it is read at a glance.
What does but mean in all but one?
There it means except: every one except one. In nothing but rain it means only. Both phrases are in the practice lines under the sheet, for a child ready to meet the word's other jobs.
