How it works
Children write frum, fom or form: the vowel fools the ear, the r hides in a blend. This from sight word worksheet has them trace it, circle it among for, form and farm, and finish The card is ___ Dad.

Said frum, and the r is easy to lose
Wiktionary gives American from the vowel of sun, so it rhymes with come and some. British speakers use the o of hot, so there it sounds out. The other snag is the blend. F and r run together, so the r gets left out (fom) or lands behind the vowel (form). Stretch it: fff, rrr, um.
From and to work as a pair
From marks where something starts and to marks where it ends. Five phrases near the foot of this page, under The sight words and their practice lines, use both. They are from A to Z, from 1 to 10, from head to toe, from side to side and from top to bottom. Have the child act one out before writing it.
- From and form use the same four letters. Underline the second letter of each and ask which starts with fr.
- Dictate I come from a farm. Come and from hide a short u, and farm tests the r.
- Gift tags are real practice: write To on one line, From on the next, and fill in both names.
Questions and answers
Why does my student write frum or form for from?
Frum is what an American ear hears. Form has the right letters in the wrong order, because an r inside a blend is hard to place. Write the row from for from form and ask for 2 circles.
Should children sound from out or learn it by heart?
Both. Three of its four letters behave: f, r and m. Only the o is off, and only in accents where it says short u. Sound out the three, then draw a small heart over the o as the part to remember.
What are good sentences for the sight word from?
Short ones where the other words sound out: This is from me. I got it from Mom. Milk is from cows. Who is it from? puts the word last, where it is said in full and is easiest to hear.
