Lowercase j is the tallest letter here

Lowercase j is the only small letter that rises above the dashed line and drops below the baseline. At Large (19 mm) it measures about 23 mm from dot to tail. Tall l is 19. Page 1 holds 18 capitals and 30 lowercase, page 2 jam 9 times and jet 12. Your typed words replace all four sample rows. To keep J and j j, press them first in Pick from the 81 rows and words. Start with jam, jet, jig, jog and jug

Those five put each short vowel behind a j. In enjoy and banjo the j opens the second beat. The j in fajita, from Spanish, says h, and the j in hallelujah says y.

  • Lowercase j carries two dots. Start from the lower one, under the dashed line. Say: down, hook left, lift, dot.
  • Extra large (26 mm) with 3 traced rows runs to 4 pages. Under More options, set Rows to trace to 2 for 2 pages.
  • Type Jen and it fits 3 times across a row. Jack and Julia fit twice.

Questions and answers

Why are cage and fudge on a letter J sheet?

They end in the j sound, and English almost never ends a word with the letter j. It writes ge (cage, page), or dge after a short vowel (badge, fudge). Before e or i, g can say j at the front too: gem, giant.

Why does j look like an i with a tail?

It began as one. J started as I with a flourish, used to end a Roman numeral such as xxiij. In 1524 Gian Giorgio Trissino first set the two apart as letters for separate sounds. J still wears the dot of letter I.

My child writes j backward. What helps?

Look at which way the tail turns. Here j hooks left, back toward the start of the row, and so do capital J and g. Print jug or jog and trace both tails with a finger first. Next letter? See the letter list.
