Page 1 is letters, page 2 is words
At Large (19 mm), page 1 has 18 capital L's, 6 to a row, and 30 lowercase l's in 5 pairs to a row. Page 2 has lion and leaf 9 times each. Words typed into the Words box replace all four sample rows. To keep L and l l, press them first in Pick from the 81 rows and words.
Sort L words by where the l sits
L says one sound, so the list is sorted by place. Start with short words with l at the front: leg, lip, lid, lap. Blends such as blue and flag put l second. Ball, bell and hill end in a double l said once. Walk, half and could carry an l nobody says, so leave those 8 for later.
- Say it aloud: capital L goes down, then along the baseline. Lowercase l goes down and stops.
- Type l I 1 in the Words box: l is plain, I has two bars, 1 has a flag.
- Lip and lid fit 4 times across a row at Large, more than any other word listed.
Questions and answers
Why is lowercase l taller than capital L on the sheet?
Capitals in this letter style stop under the top line, about 17 mm up at Large. Tall lowercase letters such as l and k reach 19 mm. Type Ll in the Words box: which is taller? The other letters sit on the same lines.
Why is there an l in walk and could?
Walk, talk and chalk once had a spoken l. It dropped out of most accents and the spelling stayed. Could is different: its l was added to the spelling in the 1500s to match would and should. All 8 such words share one group.
Can I print a name such as Lucy or Liam?
Yes. Pick from the 81 rows and words has 9 L first names to press. The Words box takes any name up to 30 characters. Lucy and Liam fit twice across a row. Share links hold what you typed, so leave student names out.
