How this list was compiled: Written for this page on 2026-09-18: 10 starter lists of 10 words, one list per spelling pattern, each word with a dictation sentence of our own that uses the word. The lists run from easier patterns to harder ones; that order is our editorial judgment and follows no published list or standard. Spellings were checked on 2026-09-18: 88 words against the macOS system word list, and the 12 inflected forms and contractions that list leaves out (hopping, hoping, dropped, boxes, dishes, babies, stories, wolves, monkeys, heroes, they're, you're) against their English entries at https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ fetched the same day. The lists are only a starting point: the tool is for the teacher's own words. Licence: own work

How it works

Paste this week's words into the spelling test generator and it does two jobs. On screen, the device reads each word aloud and the student types it. The page marks the answers at the end and offers the missed words again. On paper, the same list becomes a numbered test sheet or a worksheet for ABC order, missing letters or multiple choice.

From a word list to a marked test

Type or paste your words into the box Your spelling words, one on each line. To add a sentence, put it after a colon. Press Start test. The student hears each word, types it and presses Enter, or taps Next word. The end shows the score and each missed word beside what was typed. No list yet? The menu of saved and ready-made lists holds 10.

Four sheets from the same list

To create your own spelling worksheets, choose a sheet above the preview and press Print. The last page of Test sheet holds the words to read aloud. ABC order, Missing letters and Multiple choice each end with an answer key page. New version reshuffles their blanks and wrong answers. Up to 20 words fit on 1 page of Letter or A4.

The voice, and what it means for privacy

The read-aloud uses only voices built into your device, so the words are not sent to a speech service. Leave student names out of the list. Capitals are not marked in your own words until you tick Capitals count under Voice, speed and marking.

  • Give every homophone a sentence. Without one, a student who types there for their has not made a spelling mistake.
  • Under Voice, speed and marking, set Reading speed to Slow for first and second graders.
  • In a full classroom, headphones let each student replay a word quietly.

Questions and answers

Is this spelling worksheet generator free for a whole class?

Yes. There is no charge, no account and no limit on tests or sheets.

Can I save a list and change it later, to make editable spelling worksheets?

Yes. Each sheet is drawn from the words in the box, so an edit shows in the preview. To keep a list, name it in Title on the sheets and press Save list. It stays in this browser, in the menu of saved lists.

Does the spelling test maker work on a Chromebook, a tablet or a phone?

Yes, in any current browser. The voice changes from device to device: each offers its own set, and a few offer none. Try one student device before the lesson. If it has no voice, read the words aloud yourself while students type.

How does a spelling test generator multiple choice sheet choose its wrong answers?

By rule, such as doubling a consonant or swapping ie and ei. It keeps 2 or 3 and drops any real word it knows, such as hopping for hoping. A word with fewer than 2 is left off and named on the answer key.

Is there an ABC order worksheet generator here?

Yes. Choose ABC order above the preview. Your words print shuffled in a box, with numbered lines below for writing them alphabetically. The answer key lists them in order. Words that share first letters, such as stone, storm and street, make a harder sheet.
