How it works

These Halloween tracing worksheets open ready to print: bat, web, moon and ghost in dotted letters, each followed by an empty row. The list holds 99 words, from boo to skeleton, and the scary ones are easy to leave out.

Read the full guide

Four words, one page

Bat and web are traced 3 times across their rows, moon and ghost twice. With the Name and Date line that is 8 rows at Large (19 mm), exactly one page. These Halloween tracing sheets print letters and guide lines only, so the empty row under web is for drawing one: a cross, an x through it, then rings.

Start with bat, cat and rat

Bat, cat and rat change only their first letter, so a child who has traced one has nearly written all three. Moon, cave, mouse, roar and crown use short letters only. Save skeleton, flashlight and the capitals of October and Halloween for confident writers. Before letters come 9 pattern rows, such as z z z z for a jack-o'-lantern grin.

  • Under the 8 8 8 8 row, draw a spider: one circle, then 4 legs on each side.
  • For the candy bowl, open More options, set What to practice to Words or sentences, and pick Please take one.

Questions and answers

Do the Halloween sheets come with pictures to color?

No. Words and guide lines are all that print, and bat, moon, ghost, pumpkin, mask and broom are quick to draw in the empty rows.

Our school does not celebrate Halloween. Is the list still useful?

Yes. The night animals group stands on its own: 14 words, among them bat, owl, spider, moth and wolf. Moon, night, dark, shadow and fog make a second set with no holiday in it. Costume, candy and party words sit in their own groups.

Which Halloween words suit a class that scares easily?

Unicorn, fairy, robot, queen, silly and pretend carry no fright at all. Leave out skull and fangs. Happy Halloween, from the practice lines, makes a friendly door sign: it takes two rows at Large and one at Medium (14 mm).
