How it works

These letter G tracing worksheets open on 3 dotted rows of capital G and 3 of lowercase g, then goat and gum, each with an empty row. Open Pick from the 84 rows and words for 68 G words: hard, soft and silent g.

Read the full guide

Two pages: G and g, then goat and gum

At Large (19 mm), 3 rows hold 15 capital G's and 24 lowercase g's. Page 2 holds goat 6 times, and gum 9 times on Letter or 6 on A4. The tail of g hangs about 6 mm under the baseline, so point to where it stops. Words you type replace all four sample rows. To keep G and g g g g, press them first in Pick from the 84 rows and words.

Hard g first, soft g later

G is reliably hard before a, o and u: goat, gum, gate. Before e, i and y it usually says j: giraffe, gem, gym. Eight listed words stay hard anyway, get, give and girl among them. In gnat, gnome and sign the g is silent.

  • Say it for lowercase g: around, straight down, hook. The dot sits on the round part, under the dashed line.
  • Type g q g q in the Words box: g's tail hooks left, q's runs straight down.

Questions and answers

What is the g with two loops that children see in books?

Lowercase g has two forms. Most book typefaces use the looptail g, with two closed loops. Handwriting, and type made for young readers, uses the opentail g, a round part with an open hooked tail. This sheet prints the opentail form, the one children write.

Where does capital G start?

At the dot on the upper right, the same place as capital C. The Romans made G as a variant of C, to give the g sound its own letter. Once C is steady, G is a C that ends in a short shelf.

Can I print a G name such as Grace or Gus?

Yes. Type it in the Words box and it replaces the sample rows. At Large, Gus fits 3 times across a row. Gabriel and Georgia take a row each. A share link carries what you typed, so leave student names out. See more letters.
