How it works

These letter K tracing worksheets open on 3 rows of capital K, 3 of lowercase k, then kite and key, each with an empty row. Open Pick from the 80 rows and words for 61 K words sorted by what the k does.

Read the full guide

The first sheet, row by row

At Large (19 mm), 3 rows hold 18 capital K's on Letter, 15 on A4, then 24 lowercase k's. Page 2 has kite and key 9 times each. Lowercase k is the taller letter: 19 mm to capital K's 17. Typed words replace all four sample rows. To keep K and k k k k, press them first in Pick from the 80 rows and words.

Pick K words by what the k does

Most K words put k before e or i, where c would turn soft: kite, key, king. Before a, o and u English writes c, so K words there are mostly borrowed: kangaroo and koala from Aboriginal Australian languages, kayak from Inuktitut. In knee, knot and knife the k is silent.

  • Talk the capital through: tall line down from the dot, lift, slant in to the middle, slant out.
  • If k comes out as a small capital, type Kk in the Words box. Lowercase k's top slant starts at the dashed line.
  • In the Words box, type back neck, then kick sock duck on line 2: every short vowel before ck.

Questions and answers

Why is there a k in knee if nobody says it?

English once said both sounds, and the spelling kept the k after speech dropped it. Today k is silent before n at the start of a word, so knot sounds like not and knight like night. The 11 kn words sit in one group.

When is the k sound spelled c, k or ck?

At the front, c comes before a, o and u (cat, cup) and k before e and i (kettle, kid). Ending a short word, ck follows a short vowel (duck, sock). A lone k follows a consonant or long vowel (milk, week). Kick shows both.

Can the sheet show a child's own name, such as Kayla?

Yes. Type it in the Words box, up to 30 characters. Kayla fits twice across a row and Kai 3 times. The Share link button makes a link that carries what you typed, so keep student names out of links. See other letters.
