Narrow letters: 18 capitals and 30 lowercase
At Large (19 mm), capital I fits 6 across, so 3 rows hold 18. Lowercase i comes as 5 pairs to a row: 30. Page 2 holds igloo and insect 6 times each. The dot of the i floats level with the capital's top, about 17 mm up. Typing replaces all four sample rows. To keep I and i i, press them first in Pick from the 82 rows and words.
Igloo, ice and iguana start three different ways
Igloo, insect and inch start with short i, the first sound to teach. Ice, ivy and island have long i. In iguana and impala the strong beat comes second, so the i is easy to miss. Ending ski, taxi and kiwi, the i says long e.
- Lowercase i shows two dots: the starting dot is the lower one, under the dashed line. Say: down, lift, dot.
- Extra large (26 mm) with 3 traced rows takes 4 pages. At Large the sheet is 2.
Questions and answers
Why does capital I have bars on this sheet?
So nobody takes it for a lowercase l. In many typefaces it is a bare line. The Print style is built from Andika, designed for beginning readers: its capital I has a bar at each end, about 8 mm wide at Large. Try Illinois.
Why is the word I always a capital?
English writes the word I as a capital wherever it falls, the only pronoun treated that way. The habit is older than printing: a lone small i was easy to lose on a handwritten page. The dot on lowercase i arose for the same reason.
Does the dot on a lowercase i have a name?
It is called a tittle, and lowercase j wears one too. It is not where the pencil starts: the printed starting dot sits lower, on the line itself. For another letter, see the letter list.
