Two pages: 15 H and 24 h, then hat and hen

At Large (19 mm), 3 rows hold 15 capital H's and 24 lowercase h's. Page 2 holds hat and hen 9 times each. Both letters start at the top of the left-hand line, but lowercase is taller: 19 mm to capital H's 17. What you type replaces all four sample rows. To keep H and h h h h, press them first in Pick from the 82 rows and words.

Start with hat words, leave hour for later

In this list h is always followed by a vowel, so there are no blends. Begin with h and a short vowel: hat, hen, hill, hop, hug. Horse and hive bring other vowels. Hour, honest, honor and heir keep the h on paper and drop it in speech.

  • Classroom wording that fits the dot on lowercase h: start high, straight down, then over the hump.

Questions and answers

My child's h looks like an n. What helps?

The two differ only in the stick. The dot for h sits by the top line, the dot for n just under the dashed line. At Large, h climbs to 19 mm, n to about 12. Type h n h n in the Words box.

Why is the h silent in hour and honest?

A few English words, mostly from French, write an h and do not say it: hour, honest, honor, heir. The clue is the word in front: an hour. Herb is left out, because some speakers say its h and others drop it.

What sounds does h make with other letters?

Alone, h is the puff of air at the start of hat. As the second letter of a team it spells others: sh in ship, ch in chin, a quiet th in thin, a buzzing th in this. Pick another letter from the letter list.
