Lowercase f starts on the hook

Capital F's dot is at the top left corner. Lowercase f is alone in the Print style: its dot sits at the right tip of the hook, just under the top line. At Large (19 mm), page 1 holds 18 capitals and 30 lowercase. Page 2 holds fish and fan 9 times each. Typing clears all four sample rows. To keep F and f f f f f, press them first in Pick from the 84 rows and words.

Pick F words by what follows the f

A vowel follows the f in the first group: fan, fed, fin, fog, fun. Flag and frog add a second consonant. Off, puff and cliff end in double f. Leaf, wolf and shelf end in a single f.

  • Say it before the pencil moves: over the hook, straight down, then cross. The hook begins at the dot.
  • Type f t f t in the Words box: at Large, t stops about 3 mm under f.
  • For the sound, rest the top teeth on the bottom lip and blow. Add the voice and f becomes v.

Questions and answers

Why does the f in of sound like v?

Of is the one everyday English word where a single f says v. The two sounds share a mouth shape, and v adds the voice. Off, with its double f, keeps the f sound. Type of off on one line of the Words box.

Which words change f to v in the plural?

Leaf, loaf, wolf, shelf and half do: leaves, loaves, wolves, shelves, halves. Roof does not: two roofs. Scarf goes either way: scarves or scarfs. The spelling does not say which, so trace each pair together. Elf, from the letter E sheet, makes elves.

Do phone and laugh belong on a letter F sheet?

Not for tracing: they have the f sound and no letter f. Phone and photo spell the sound ph, and laugh and cough spell it gh. Type them into the Words box for a sound sort beside fish. More letters are on the letter list.
