The sight words and their practice lines

The word on its own 3

  • no 2 letters for 2 sounds: n, then an o that says its own name, as it does in go and so. Both letters sit between the base line and the dashed middle line, with nothing tall and nothing hanging.
  • No no Capital N beside small n. As an answer the word usually opens the sentence, so its capital gets more use than most. The capital is three straight strokes and has no hump at all.
  • no no no no no Five to trace in one row. Each n starts at the dashed line, drops to the base line, climbs back up the same stroke and goes over one hump. The o that follows is a single round.

Spot-the-word rows 4

  • know no nose no Circle no 2 times. Know sounds exactly the same, with a silent k in front and a w behind. Nose starts with the word and keeps its long o.
  • no on no on no Circle no 3 times. On is the same two letters in the other order. Have the child put a finger under the first letter and say its sound before circling.
  • not no now no nod Circle no 2 times. Not, now and nod all start with the word and add one letter, and that letter changes the o: short in not and nod, the ow of cow in now.
  • so no go no do no Circle no 3 times. So and go rhyme with it and differ only in the first letter. Do ends the same way and says oo.

Missing-letter rows 3

  • n_ _o n_ _o Fill in o, then n, then o, then n. The gap swaps sides each time, so the child has to decide which letter comes first. That is the same decision that tells no from on.
  • n_ s_ g_ One letter fills all three gaps, and the three words rhyme. Read them back as a chant: no, so, go.
  • no n_ __ A fading row: trace the whole word, add its second letter, then write both letters on the blanks with nothing to follow.

Answers, signs and no plus a naming word 12

  • no more More ends in a silent e. Here no means not any, so it leans on the word after it instead of standing alone.
  • no nuts A sign on many lunchroom doors. Nuts sounds out, and both words start with the same letter, so the child writes n twice.
  • no peeking A rule for hide and seek and for spelling tests. Peeking has the double e of see.
  • no problem A friendly way to answer thank you. Clap prob-lem as two beats; both beats sound out.
  • no running A hallway sign. Running doubles the n of run before ing, so this phrase holds the letter n four times.
  • no school today What a snow day means. School has a ch that says k and the double o of moon. Clap to-day as two beats.
  • no way Way has the vowel team ay, as in day and play. Said with a grin, it means I can hardly believe it.
  • no, not yet Three short words, and the first two start the same way. In not the t closes the word and the o turns short. Yet sounds out.
  • no, thank you The polite answer. The comma marks a short pause after no. Thank starts with the quiet th and ends in n-k.
  • oh no What you say when the block tower falls. Oh and no rhyme, and the h in oh makes no sound.
  • say no Say has the vowel team ay. A phrase for a class talk about when it is right to say no, kindly and clearly.

How this list was compiled: Every line was written for this site on 2026-09-18 and read aloud for sense. No line is taken from a published sight word list or workbook, and the page claims no list or grade level for the word. Spellings were checked against the macOS system word list on 2026-09-18; plurals and -ing forms that the list leaves out (dogs, legs, says, running, peeking) were checked one by one. The counts in the spot-the-word rows and the word counts of the sentences were worked out. That no ends in the long o of go, that know is a homophone, that the no meaning not any is a reduced form of none (literally not one) used before consonants, and that the noun takes a plural: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/no (pronunciation, homophones, etymology 1 and 2, checked 2026-09-18).
