The sight words and their practice lines

The word on its own 3

  • up 2 letters for 2 sounds, and both sound out: the short u of us and sun, then p. The u sits between the lines. The p starts at the dashed line and drops its stick below the base line.
  • Up up Capital U beside small u: the same open shape at two heights. The capital runs from the top line to the base line, and the small one stops at the dashed line.
  • up up up up up Five to trace in one row. Check two things when it is done: every u is open at the top like a cup, and every p hangs below the base line to the same depth.

Spot-the-word rows 4

  • cup up pup up Circle up 2 times. Cup and pup end with the whole word, so the child circles only the up that has a space on both sides.
  • tub up cub up Circle up 2 times. Tub and cub end in u-b. The stick of a b climbs above its round, and the stick of a p drops below it.
  • up put up but up Circle up 3 times. Put holds the same two letters in the other order. But brings in a b, which is a p with its stick pointing the other way.
  • up us up is up Circle up 3 times. Us starts the same way and is has the same length. Up is the only word in the row with a letter that hangs below the line.

Missing-letter rows 3

  • c_p p_p _p The same letter fills every gap: cup, pup, up. Read the three back and listen for the rhyme.
  • u_ _p u_ _p Fill in p, then u, then p, then u. Say the word before each one: the sound that is missing is the letter to write.
  • up u_ __ A fading row: trace the word, add its p, then write both letters on the blanks with no dots to follow.

Commands to act out, then trace 12

  • clean up Clean has the vowel team ea, as in eat. Here up means all the way, until the job is done.
  • hands up Hands sounds out and ends in n-d-s. Two words, two beats, and arms in the air.
  • hurry up Hurry has a double r and ends in a y that says long e. Clap hur-ry as two beats.
  • line up Said at every classroom door. Line ends in a silent e that lets the i say its name.
  • sit up tall Sit sounds out. Tall has the a of ball and a double l. A good line to say just before the pencils come out.
  • speak up Speak has the vowel team ea, as in eat. It means say it a little louder, which a quiet reader may need to hear kindly.
  • stand up Stand starts with the blend s-t and ends in n-d, and every sound can be heard. Have the class do it, then trace it.
  • tidy up Tidy has an i that says its name and ends in a y that says long e. Clap ti-dy as two beats, then do it: one thing back in its place.
  • up high High spends three letters, igh, on one sound: long i. Up high and down low make a clapping game for partners.
  • up the steps Here up comes first and tells which way. Steps starts with the blend s-t and sounds out.
  • wake up Wake ends in a silent e. Here up means out of sleep, not higher. Act it out with a big stretch.
  • zip up Both words sound out, three letters and then two. A coat-time phrase that a child can read alone early on.

Sentences to read and copy 13

  • A cat ran up a tree. 6 words, more than any other line here. Cat and ran sound out. Tree has the blend t-r and a double e.
  • Hold it up for us. 5 words, with up and us in one line. They start alike, so the last letter decides. The o in hold says its name.
  • I can zip it up. 5 words. Can, zip, it and up all sound out, and I is just the name of its letter. A line a child can read with no help.
  • I woke up at six. 5 words. At and six sound out, and woke ends in a silent e. Here up means out of sleep.
  • Is the baby up yet? 5 words and a question mark. Here up means awake. Baby ends in a y that says long e. Yet sounds out.
  • Line up at the door. 5 words. A command the class hears every day. Door has a double o that says or, unlike the oo in look.
  • Look up at the sky. 5 words. Look has the double o of book. At sounds out, and the y in sky says long i. Let the class do it before they read it.
  • My kite went up. 4 words. Kite ends in a silent e. Went sounds out and ends in the blend n-t. Up comes last, where it is easy to find.
  • Pick up the blocks. 4 words. Pick and blocks both hold ck, two letters for one sound. Blocks starts with the blend b-l.
  • Put it up on top. 5 words. Put and up hold the same two letters in opposite order, and the u is not the same sound: put has the u of pull. It, on and top sound out.
  • The sun is up. 4 words. Sun and up share the short u, so the child hears the same vowel twice. The s in is says z.
  • Time is up. 3 words. Here up means finished. Read it aloud together when the timer rings at the end of tracing.
  • Up and up it went. 5 words. The word comes first with a capital U and then again without one, the way a story about a lost balloon might go.

How this list was compiled: Every line was written for this site on 2026-09-18 and read aloud for sense. No line is taken from a published sight word list or workbook, and the page claims no list or grade level for the word. Spellings were checked against the macOS system word list on 2026-09-18; plurals and past forms that the list leaves out (hands, steps, blocks, went, ran, woke) were checked one by one. The counts in the spot-the-word rows and the word counts of the sentences were worked out. That up is said with the short u of cup and has no homophone, and the senses used in the notes (to an upright position, as in stand up and get up; completely, as in drink up; awake and out of bed; finished, as in Time is up): https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/up (pronunciation, adverb and adjective senses, checked 2026-09-18). Sound notes describe general American pronunciation. Licence: own work

How it works

Up sounds out. The trouble is the pencil: p turns into q or b. This sight word up worksheet has the child trace it and circle it among "us", "put", "cup" and "pup". They finish the sentence Look ___ at the sky.

Turn the sheet upside down

Up is two letters for two sounds, the short u of sun and then p. What goes wrong is direction. A u is an n turned over, and a p is a d turned over. So a written up held upside down reads dn. Show the class once. Both letters begin at the middle line and go down, and only the p keeps going below the base line.

Up mostly follows an action word

A class hears up all day behind another word: stand up, line up, clean up. The meaning shifts each time. Wiktionary lists "to an upright position" for stand up, "completely" for drink up, and "finished" for "Time is up." Say a command, let everyone do it, then write it.

  • Call the u an open cup. Closed at the top it reads as a or o.
  • Write cup and pup, cover the first letter and ask what is left. Then write "c_p p_p _p" on the board.
  • Set a timer for the writing. When it rings, the class reads one line aloud together: "Time is up."

Questions and answers

Why give up a sheet of its own if it sounds out?

Sound it out first: u, p. It still earns a sheet because children meet it early, sometimes before short u has been taught. Both of its letters are also easy to turn around. The aim is a fast, tidy up.

My student writes uq or ub. Which rows help?

Two rows at the foot of this page go on the board. One, "tub up cub up", sets p against b. Next, "up put up but up" adds another b. Say stick down, then round. A q makes its round first. A b's stick climbs.

What are good sentences for the sight word up?

Ones a child can act out or has lived: "The sun is up." "I woke up at six." "My kite went up." "Pick up the blocks." In each, up follows the action. To print one, press it under Pick from the 13 sentences with "up".
