The sight words and their practice lines

The word on its own 3

  • help 4 letters for 4 sounds: h, short e, l, p. Every letter does its usual job. The one that slips away is the l, tucked between the vowel and the p and said in a hurry.
  • help help help help Four to trace, the most that fit one row at the Large height. H and l reach the top line, the e sits small between them, and the p drops its stick below the base line.
  • Help! Help! One word can be a whole sentence. A capital H and an exclamation mark are all it takes. Read it loudly, then trace it.

Spot-the-word rows 4

  • half help hold help Circle help 2 times. Half and hold each have an h and an l. In half the l is silent; in help it is sounded, quickly, right before the p.
  • help held help hello Circle help 2 times. Held and hello both begin h-e-l, so the child has to read on past the third letter to find the p.
  • help hop help heap Circle help 2 times. Hop and heap start with h and end with p, and neither has an l. This is the row for a child who writes hep.
  • yelp help kelp help Circle help 2 times. Yelp and kelp rhyme with it and share e-l-p. A yelp is a sudden, high cry, and kelp is a large brown seaweed.

Missing-letter rows 3

  • h_lp he_p hel_ One letter is missing each time: e, then l, then p. Stretch the word first, hhh-eee-lll-p, and feel the tongue lift for the l.
  • he_p he_p he_p The answer is l all three times, because l is the letter that drops out when the word is said fast.
  • help hel_ he__ h___ Help fades from the back: write p, then l-p, then e-l-p after the h. The l-p ending gets finished four times in one row.

Help you give and help you get 11

  • call for help What to do when something is not safe. Call has the a of ball, and both its l's make one sound.
  • glad to help Here help is something you do. Glad sounds out, with a g-l blend at the front.
  • help a friend Friend hides an i that nobody says. It ends in the blend n-d, the way help ends in l-p.
  • help at home Setting the table, feeding the cat, matching socks. Help and home both start with h, and the e on home is silent.
  • help clean up Help is often followed by a second doing word, with nothing in between. Clean has e-a for a long e.
  • help each other A class rule in three words. Each has e-a for a long e and ends in c-h.
  • help helper helpful A helper is the person, and helpful is the word for what that person is. Help sits unchanged at the front of each.
  • help helps helped The endings go on and help stays whole. Helped is still one beat, and its e-d says t.
  • help set the table A job to draw: forks, plates, cups. Set sounds out. Table ends in l-e, which sounds like a quick ul.
  • help yourself What a host says: take what you like. Yourself is your plus self, and self has the same e-l as help with an f where the p was.
  • I need help Here help is a thing: you can need it, get it or give it. Need has a double e that says its name.

How it works

Help sounds out, yet the l hides before the p and the word gets written hep. This help sight word worksheet has the child trace it, circle it among held, hello, hop and heap, and finish Can you ___ me?

Read the full guide

The l that hides before the p

The trouble is the ending: l and p are said almost at once, so a child stretching the word hears h-e-p. Wiktionary records a dated Southern US pronunciation without the l, and the spelling he'p. Have the child say help slowly and feel the tongue lift for the l before the lips close. Write the row he_p he_p he_p and the child adds the l three times.

Help you give and help you get

  • Write Help! Help! and let the child read it loudly. One word and an exclamation mark make a sentence.
  • After I help and he helps. have the child say the line for she, we and they.
