The ow of cow, not the ow of low
How is three letters for two sounds: h, then o and w as a team, as in now and cow. The same team says long o in low, show and know, so a child fresh from show may read how as hoe. The row how low how own holds both sounds. It does not print. Press Show all 34 practice lines near the foot of this page, copy the row and read it aloud.
The question word of math time
Who, what, when, where and why begin with wh. How does not. It is also how a counting problem begins. Nine of the phrases ask for a measure, from how many to how far. Have the child pick one and finish the question.
- Write who above how and join the matching letters with lines. The lines cross: order makes the word.
- On the board, the row how n__ c__ w__ builds three rhymes from one ending. Read all four aloud once filled.
- Write How are you? first thing, then let partners ask it aloud. The capital H and question mark get practice.
Questions and answers
Why does my student mix up how and who?
Both use h, o and w, and both start with an h sound, since the w in who is silent. The endings differ: ow in how, oo in who. Write how who how now on the board. The child says each word before circling.
Should how be sounded out or taught whole?
Either, depending on timing. H keeps its usual sound, and ow is a regular team found in now, cow and down. Until that team is taught, treat how as a whole word. Afterwards, fold it into the rhyme family with cow how now how.
Does every line with how need a question mark?
No. 9 of the 12 sentences are questions that open with a capital H. The other 3 keep a small h and end in a period. They are I know how to hop., Show me how. and See how I do it.
