Two a's, two sounds
The first a is a quick uh and carries no stress; the word leans on its second half, a-WAY. The second a teams up with y to say long a, the sound at the end of day and stay. Wiktionary rhymes away with words that end in that sound.
A plus way, closed up
Wiktionary gives away as a- joined to way. Cover the first letter and read way. Children who know way often leave a gap or drop the first a, so the row away way away always asks them to find the whole word. The y is the only letter with a tail.
- Clap it: a-WAY. Two claps, the second one louder.
- Build way from the tiles, then put the other a in front with no gap.
- At clean-up, hold up Put your toys away. and let the class read it.
Questions and answers
Why does my student write a way as two words?
A is a word and way is a word, so the gap feels right. The row away way away always has the joined word to circle. Then let the child build a and way from tiles and push them together.
Can the sight word away be sounded out?
Mostly. W is regular and a-y says long a, as in day. The catch is the first a, which says uh because the stress falls on the second half. Teach it as uh-way.
How is away different from always?
Always starts a-l, ends in s and begins with the sound of all. Away has neither letter and begins with a quick uh. Both words are in the find grid.
