Six letters, four sounds
Y, short e, l, long o: Wiktionary's American pronunciation has four sounds. The two l's make one sound, and o-w says long o, as it does at the end of below. Cover the last two letters and the child reads yell.
Fellow is one letter away
Fellow rhymes with yellow and changes only the first letter, so the row fellow yellow mellow makes the child check that letter. The y comes first and is the only letter with a tail.
- Build it from four tiles: y, e, ll and ow.
- Have the child underline yell inside yellow, then name the two letters left over.
- Dictate Corn is yellow. and check for both l's and the w.
Questions and answers
Can the sight word yellow be sounded out?
Yes, once two letter teams are known: l-l makes one l sound and o-w says long o. Y and short e are regular. That gives four sounds for six letters.
Why does my student write yelow or yello?
Yelow has lost an l and yello has lost the w. Both come from spelling by ear: the second l and the w add no new sound. The row ye__ow yell__ has the child write l-l, then o-w.
How is yellow different from fellow?
Only the first letter differs: y in yellow, f in fellow. The two words rhyme. Fellow is in the find grid, and the row fellow yellow mellow puts them side by side.
