How it works
Each free sheet draws 8 of 132 sentences, each with a blank in front of the main verb. Only one of the words under it fits: She is reading, not she are reading.

The 23 helping verbs
am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been; have, has, had; do, does, did; can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would. A helping verb comes before the main verb and tells when, or how sure, the action is.
Three sets
Set picks one. Be, have and do matches the verb to its subject (they are, he has). Can, will, may and more has the modals, where the wrong choices add an s (she cans swim). Do, does and did is the do does worksheet: questions and not.
- In Do, does and did a time word (yesterday, last night) marks every sentence that takes did.
Questions and answers
What is a helping verb?
A verb that comes before the main verb and helps it: in She is reading, is helps reading. The forms of be, have and do and the modal verbs (can, will, should and others) are the usual helping verbs.
What is the difference between a helping verb and a linking verb?
A helping verb goes with another verb (is reading). A linking verb stands alone and joins the subject to a word that describes it (is happy). Be can do either job.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. It prints as the last page unless you untick Add an answer key as the last page under More options. It circles the right helping verb in every sentence of the sheet you print.
