Two letters, and the second one buzzes
Is has 2 letters and 2 sounds, but the second is not the usual one for s. Wiktionary rhymes the word with his, fizz and quiz, so a child who spells by ear writes iz. The row hi_ a_ ha_ i_ builds his, as, has and is, and the missing letter is always s. It does not print. Press Show all 33 practice lines near the foot of this page and copy it by hand.
A word that hides in speech
It is shrinks to it's, so say the two words apart before writing. Ask Is it wet? and have the child answer Yes, it is. Said last, the word keeps its full buzz. Two phrases swap the pair: it is and is it.
- Start the s near the top and curve left first. Starting at the bottom tends to turn it backward.
- In, it, if and is differ only in the last letter. Write i_ four times and finish each aloud.
- His hat is big. holds is twice, once inside his. Have the child underline both.
Questions and answers
Can the is sight word be sounded out?
Yes, once a child knows that s can say z at the end of a word. Tap two sounds, short i and z, then write i and s. Teaching it beside his, as and has lets one rule cover four common words.
My student reads is but leaves it out when writing. Why?
In speech the word is often just a z stuck to the word before it, as in it's hot. There seems to be nothing to write. Say the sentence with one finger up per word, then count the words on paper.
How do I teach is apart from in, it and if?
All four start with i, so the last letter decides. Write the row is in is it is if on the board and ask for 3 circles. Then dictate the four words in mixed order and have the child name the last letter before writing.
