The sight words and their practice lines

The word on its own 3

  • did 3 letters for 3 sounds: d, short i, d. It sounds out from end to end and reads the same from either end. Each d begins with its round and ends with a tall stick. The i between them is a short stick, then a dot.
  • Did did Capital D beside small d. The capital starts with its stick and bows to the right. The small d starts with its round, to the left of its stick. A question such as Did it fit? needs the capital.
  • did did did did did Five to trace in one row, which makes ten small ds. Say round, up, down for each one. The round always sits to the left of the stick.

Spot-the-word rows 4

  • did bid did bib did Circle did 3 times. Bid turns the first d into a b, and bib turns both. In a d the round is written first. In a b the stick is.
  • did dad did dud did Circle did 3 times. Dad and dud keep both ds and change only the middle letter, so the eye has to land on the i and its dot.
  • dig did dip did dim Circle did 2 times. Dig, dip and dim start d-i and change the last letter. The p of dip has the shape of a d turned upside down.
  • hid did kid lid did Circle did 2 times. Hid, kid and lid rhyme with did and change only the first letter. All four sound out the same way.

Missing-letter rows 3

  • d_d _id di_ Fill in i, then d, then d. Each gap sits in a different place, so by the third one the child has written every letter of did.
  • d_d h_d k_d l_d One letter fills all four gaps and makes four rhymes. Start with k_d, where i is the only letter that makes a word a child knows. On its own d_d could also be dad.
  • did d_d ___ Copy the word, finish it, then write all of it from memory on the last three blanks.

Phrases: answers, questions and things someone did 11

  • did it Two words with the same short i, and both sound out. Together they hold only three different letters: d, i and t.
  • did my part Part has ar, a vowel and an r said as one sound. My ends in a y that says long i. A line for the end of clean-up time.

  • did you How a question about the past begins. Said fast, the two words run together, and Wiktionary lists didja as an informal spelling of that sound. On paper it is always two words.
  • did you know The opening of many fact cards. Know begins with a silent k and ends in the long o of go.
  • I did too What a child says when a friend shares news. This too means also, and its double o says oo.
  • never did Never is two beats, nev-er, and both halves sound out. Did comes last and is said clearly.
  • yes, we did An answer in three words. Did comes last and stands for the whole action: Did you clean up? Yes, we did.

How this list was compiled: Every line was written for this site on 2026-09-20 and read aloud for sense. No line is taken from a published sight word list or workbook, and the page claims no list or grade level for the word. That did is said d, short i, d in one syllable, that it rhymes with the other words ending in the same i-d sound, that it is the simple past of do and that it is a palindrome: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/did (pronunciation, verb sense and the category English palindromes, checked 2026-09-20). That didja is an informal pronunciation spelling of did you: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/didja (checked 2026-09-20). That the verb after did is a bare form that does not change (did she come, not came; never did ate), and that did can be added to a plain statement for emphasis: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do-support (checked 2026-09-20). Did is not in the lists of words with a weak form at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stress_and_vowel_reduction_in_English (checked 2026-09-20), so no line here says that it weakens. Where the pencil starts the small d, the small b, the small i and the capital D was read from the tool's own stroke table for the Print letter style. Spellings were checked against the macOS system word list; the plural laps is not a headword there and was checked separately. The counts in the spot-the-word rows and the word counts of the sentences were worked out. Sound notes describe general American pronunciation. Licence: own work

How it works

Did sounds out, d, short i, d, yet it comes back as bid, bib or dad. This did sight word worksheet has the child trace it, circle it among dad, bid, bib and dip, and finish She ___ her best.

Read the full guide

A d at each end, and both can flip

Nothing in did is irregular: three letters, three sounds, and it rhymes with hid, kid and lid. The trap is its shape. Turn the first d around and the word reads bid. Turn both and it reads bib. Both are in the find grid. Did reads the same from either end, like dad, mom and pop, so a child can check it right to left.

After did, the action word stays plain

Did is do in the past, and it carries the past for the whole sentence. The question is Did you find it? and the answer is I found it. Wikipedia's article on do-support gives did she come, not came. Read I did not see it. aloud, then ask which word says it already happened.

  • Build did from its tiles, then cover the i with a paper a. Did becomes dad. Swap and reread.
  • Hold the traced word to a mirror. It reads bib, so the child sees what a flipped d does.
  • Dictate Did it fit? All three words sound out with a short i, so a slip is a letter shape.

Questions and answers

Why does my student write bid or bib for did?

The d was started with its stick, and that makes a b. A small d starts with its round, as a and o do, and its stick comes last. Say round, up, down for each d, then give the row did bid did bib did.

How do I help a child tell did from dad?

Point at the middle letter. Did has a thin i with a dot, dad has a round a, and nothing else differs. Dad did a flip. puts the two side by side, and the row did dad did dud did asks for 3 circles.

Does a child have to memorize did?

No. Did sounds out: d, short i, d. Let the child blend it the first few times. It is taught as a sight word so that it comes to be read at a glance, and blending it often is how that happens.

Should didn't go on the same sheet?

Better to wait. Didn't is did and not with an apostrophe where the o was, and in fast American speech its second d can vanish: Wiktionary lists dint as a pronunciation spelling. Every line here keeps did not as two words.
