One word for the past of have and has
Today I have and she has. Yesterday both of us had: Wiktionary lists had as the past of have, and has as a present form of the same verb. Say a have or has sentence and let the child move it to yesterday, as in You had your turn.
A tall letter at each end
Had starts with a tall h and ends with a tall d, with a short a between them. Has, hat and hid keep that h, so the eye has to reach the last letter. Turn the d around and had reads hab, which is not a word, so reading it back catches the slip.
- Before to, many speakers say hat to. Dictate He had to go home. and check the d.
- Rhyme it: had, bad, dad. Only the first letter changes.
- Build had from its tiles, then swap the d for a t to make hat.
