How it works
S letter tracing starts here: 3 dotted rows of capital S, 3 of lowercase s, then sun and sock, each with an empty row. The 66 S words below are sorted by sound.

Page 1 is S and s, page 2 is sun and sock
At Large (19 mm), 3 rows hold 18 capital S's and 24 lowercase s's, in 4 pairs a row. Page 2 holds sun 9 times and sock 6. Lowercase s is the capital again at about 12 mm. Capital S is about 18. Typed words replace all four sample rows. To keep the letter rows, type S on line 1 of the Words box and s s on line 2.
Pick S words by the sound the s makes
More English words begin with s than with any other letter. Sun, sit and soap start with s and a vowel, where the hiss is clearest. Star, snake and swim add a second consonant. Sh words have a group, and so do is, his and nose, where s says z.
- S is curvy. For a first try pick Extra large (26 mm) under Letter height, then set Rows to trace to 2 in More options.
Questions and answers
Why does the s in nose and dogs say z?
S has a second job. Inside or at the end of a word it often says z: nose, rose, easy, is, has. The s that means more than one follows the sound before it: s after t in cats, z after g in dogs.
What helps with a backwards s?
Start from the dot. On capital S and on lowercase s it sits at the right, near the top, so a row that begins anywhere else shows at a glance. After the 3 dotted rows, watch where the pencil lands first on the empty row.
Do sh words belong on an S letter tracing sheet?
For the pencil, yes: ship and shoe begin with the same s. For the ear, keep them apart, since s and h together make a new sound. Sugar has the sh sound and no h. More letters are on the letter tracing list.
