How it works

These letter P tracing worksheets print 3 dotted rows of capital P and 3 of lowercase p, then pig and pen, each with an empty row. Below are 66 P words: p in front, pl and pr blends, ph words.

Read the full guide

Six capitals to a row, then pig and pen

At Large (19 mm), 3 rows hold 18 capital P's and 24 lowercase p's. Page 2 repeats pig and pen 9 times each. The stick of p runs about 6 mm under the baseline, about as far as g, j, q and y. Typed words replace all four sample rows. To keep the letter rows, type P on line 1 of the Words box and p p p p on line 2.

A steady sound, until h comes along

P says the same thing at the front of pig, at the end of cup and doubled in happy. The pl and pr group is for blending practice. Save phone, photo and dolphin for later: there ph says f. In pterodactyl and psalm the p is silent.

  • Classroom wording for lowercase p: from the dot, straight down through the baseline, back up the stick, then around.
  • For the board: P makes the sound of the Greek letter pi, yet looks like the Greek letter rho.

Questions and answers

How do I set up letter P tracing worksheets preschool children can manage?

Choose Extra large (26 mm) under Letter height, then open More options and set Rows to trace to 2. The sheet stays at 2 pages, with 4 lowercase p's to a row. Three traced rows would take 4 pages.

What helps a child who mixes up p with q or b?

Point at the printed dot. On p it sits at the top of the stick, just under the dashed line. On b it is up by the top line, and on q on the round part. Type p b p b in the Words box.

Why does ph say f in phone?

The spelling came with words borrowed from Greek, where ph stands for the letter phi. English says the pair as f: phone, photo, dolphin, elephant. The list keeps them in their own group, so a lesson on the p sound can leave them out.

Can I print a P name such as Paul or Penny?

Yes. Type it into the Words box and the sample rows make way. Paul and Penny fit twice across a row. Pennsylvania fills a row alone. A share link carries what was typed, so leave student names out of it. More letters: letter tracing worksheets.
