How it works

These letter W tracing worksheets open with 3 dotted rows of capital W and 3 of lowercase w, then web and wig, with an empty row after each. The 60 W words below are sorted by what the w does.

Read the full guide

Page 1 is W and w, page 2 is web and wig

At Large, capital W fits 4 across on Letter or A4, so 3 rows hold 12. Lowercase prints in pairs, 3 a row, 18 in all. Page 2 holds web and wig 9 times each. Typed words replace all four sample rows. To keep the letter rows, put W on line 1 of the Words box and w w on line 2.

Pick W words by what the w does

Begin with web, wig and wet: w, a short vowel, one more sound. After w an a often says ah (wand, wasp) and or says er (worm, word). Whale and wheel open with wh, which most speakers say as w. In write and wren the w is silent. In owl, paw and new it pairs with a vowel.

  • The dot on W and w is at the top of the first slant. Both points rest on the baseline.
  • W is the widest capital in this style and w the widest small letter after m, so rows hold fewer.

Questions and answers

Why is w called double u when it looks like two v's?

The earliest writers of Old English, in the 7th or 8th centuries, spelled the w sound uu or VV. Back then u and v were still one letter, and the name double u stuck. In French the letter is called double v.

Why is the w silent in write and wrist?

It used to be heard: in Old English the w in wr was pronounced. Today it is silent before r in most kinds of English, so write sounds like right. Who, two, answer and sword hide a silent w as well.

How can a child tell w from v and m?

A w is two v shapes side by side, with points on the baseline. An m has round tops. Type w v w v on one line of the Words box to trace the two together. V is on the list of letters.
