How it works

These letter Q tracing worksheets open with rows of capital Q and lowercase q, then queen and quilt, each with an empty row. Below, 40 Q words are sorted by what qu says, plus 21 with qu inside.

Read the full guide

Two pages: Q and q, then queen and quilt

At Large (19 mm), page 1 holds 15 capital Q's and 24 lowercase q's. Page 2 repeats queen and quilt 6 times each. Capital Q starts at the same dot as O, top middle, and its tail dips about 2 mm under the baseline. The straight tail of lowercase q hangs about 6 mm under it. Typing clears all four sample rows. To keep the letter rows, type Q on line 1 of the Words box and q q q q on line 2.

What qu says

Qu says kw in queen, quick and squid. Words from French keep a plain k, as in unique, bouquet and plaque, and Spanish gave mosquito and Quito the same k. Teach kw first.

  • Say it for lowercase q: around and back up to the dot, straight down through the baseline, stop.
  • For a row of letters that start on the round part, type a d g q in the Words box.
  • Some handwriting styles end q with a flick to the right. If your school teaches one, add it after tracing.

Questions and answers

Is q always followed by u?

In everyday English words, almost always: in Latin, Q survived only before a w sound, and English still writes the pair. The exceptions a child may meet are place names: Qatar, Iraq and Iqaluit. Type qu qu qu qu in the Words box.

How do I stop mix-ups between q, p and g?

On q the dot sits on the round part, so the round part comes first. On p the dot is at the top of the stick. Against g, compare tails: g curls left, this q drops straight. See the letter list for both.

Can I print a Q name such as Quinn or Quentin?

Yes. Put each name on its own line in the Words box. At Large, Quinn fits twice across a row. Quentin and Queensland take a row each. Anything typed travels inside a share link, so keep student names out of links.
