U and u, then up and under
At Large (19 mm), page 1 holds 15 capital U's and 24 lowercase u's. Page 2 holds up 12 times and under 6. Both letters start at a dot on the top left: near the top line for U, just under the dashed line for u. Typed words replace all four sample rows. To keep the letter rows, type U on line 1 of the Words box and u u u u on line 2.
Short u first, long u later
Start with short u: up, us, under, umbrella. Unicorn, uniform and unit start like the word you. Ten un words, such as undo and unzip, reuse the short u. Keep put, push and full off the sheet: they have the vowel of foot.
- For lowercase u, from the dot: down, around, up, then straight back down. Capital U skips the last stroke.
- For the board: U and V were one letter for centuries, which is why W is called double u.
Questions and answers
How do I make letter U tracing worksheets preschool hands can manage?
Choose Extra large (26 mm) under Letter height, then open More options and set Rows to trace to 2. That prints 2 pages with 4 lowercase u's to a row. Three traced rows would take 4 pages.
Why is it a unicorn but an umbrella?
The choice between a and an follows the first sound, not the first letter. Umbrella starts with a vowel sound, so it takes an. Unicorn, uniform and unit start with the y sound of the word you, a consonant sound, so they take a.
What helps a child who mixes up u and n?
Shape does the work: n has a hump on top, u has a cup below. The dot will not help: here u and n both begin at the top left. Print nut, sun or under, where the two meet. See other letters for more pairs.
Can I print my own words or a name?
Yes. Type them into the Words box, one per line, and they replace the sample rows. At Large, up fits 4 times across a row, bus 3 times and Uma twice. A share link carries whatever you typed, so keep student names out of links.
