How it works
These letter O tracing worksheets start with 3 dotted rows of capital O and 3 of lowercase o, then ox and otter, each with an empty row. Below, 67 O words are grouped by sound: short o, long o, ow.

Page 1 is O and o, page 2 is ox and otter
At Large (19 mm), 3 rows hold 15 capital O's and 24 lowercase o's. On page 2, ox repeats 12 times and otter 6. Both dots sit at the top, in the middle. The one on o is just under the dashed line. Typing replaces all four sample rows. To keep the letter rows, type O on line 1 of the Words box and o o o o on line 2.
Short o first, then everything else o can say
Begin with short o at the front (ox, otter, olive) and in the middle (hot, mop, fox). Long o comes next: oval, open, oak. Partner spellings (ow, oi, oo) share a group, and or words have another. One, of and oven sit apart: a beginner cannot sound them out.
- Go all the way around and close at the dot. An o left open reads as c or u.
- Type o c o c in the Words box: o starts at the top, c on the right.
- Lowercase o is the round part of a, d, g and q, so it earns a second day.
Questions and answers
How is the letter O different from a zero?
The letter is rounder: about 15 mm wide at Large, against about 12 mm for the zero. Here both are the same height and start at the top, in the middle. To compare them, type O 0 O 0 in the Words box.
Where did the shape of the letter O come from?
From a drawing of an eye. The Phoenician letter behind it was named with the word for eye, and the round form has stayed much the same ever since. O comes fifteenth among the letters and fourth of the five vowels.
Can I trace an O name such as Owen or Otis?
Yes. Type it into the Words box and the sample rows give way to it. Owen fits 2 times across a row and Otis 3 times. A share link carries whatever is typed, so leave student names out of it. More letters: letter tracing worksheets.
