Start at the s
Saw and was are the same three letters, and Wiktionary lists each as an anagram of the other. Both are flat words, with no tall letter and no tail, so the outline gives no help. Only the first letter does. The row saw was saw sew has the child touch each first letter and say its sound before circling.
A and w, one sound
Saw has three letters and two sounds. The a and the w work together and say aw, as they do in paw and law, which rhyme with it. Saw is also what see becomes once the seeing is over: I see it now, I saw it before.
- Write saw and was one above the other and circle the first letter of each.
- Build saw from its three tiles, then read the row from the other end: was.
- Dictate I see it. I saw it. and ask which sentence is about now.
Questions and answers
Can the sight word saw be sounded out?
Yes, once a-w is taught as one sound. Say s, then aw, as in paw and law. A child who tries three separate sounds gets stuck, because the w is not heard on its own.
My student reads saw as was. What helps?
Slow the eye at the first letter. Saw starts with s, was with w. Was is in the find grid on purpose, and the row s_w sa_ _aw has the child write each letter in its place.
Is saw a word of its own or a form of see?
A form of see. Wiktionary gives saw as its simple past: I see a bird today, I saw one before. The pair is on this page as see and saw.
